Default Utec Question / problem *starting cranking and Idle*

started another thread about a weak ago pertaining to oil pressure problems but now i have ran into a new issue.

First off this is my set up.
Walboro 255
DW600cc injectors
and Turbo XS utec

on a cold start or warm start you have to crank then *blip* the throttle to get it to start.

then it will immediately die unless you hold it at around 1k rpms for about 5 seconds then it idles around 500 rpms which is fairly normal i also have a slight surge which i believe i have tracked down but havent had a chance to correct the problem.

the other problem is while driving. when driving normally the car is fine and runs normal at roughly 14 afr.

but when you push in the clutch it will dip down to about 300rpms surge and die out.

any ideas ?
or map corrections i should do ?

to my knowledge the stock ECU should be controlling all that except for the fuel pressure.

Please no snide remarks or a**hole comments

just helpful posts please

thanks
Damon

I dont know if this helps but.......

Are you sure its the UTEC? Im having a problem with my cars idle with a slight surging and dieing when going into neutral as well, but i believe mine is do to the BOV dumping into the open atmosphere with it being close the MAF sensor. I can see the BOV opening and closing while idling which means my spring isnt tight enough. I have a turbosmart raceport that does not have an adjustable spring tightener or softener, just have to order a tighter spring, which i dont think they make...... Im just going to get a different BOV thats adjustable.....

Has it always run like that - or it sounds like this could be a new issue that has come up? If it has always run that poorly, it sounds like the original tune was lacking and needs to be cleaned up. If it is something that just started then don't modify the map - instead look for what changed, for example vacuum line that came off.

Hal I checked all the lines by running a smoke test had one which I fixed.

This helped it on a cold start up starts almost immediately.

It also helped the surge and the car shutting off.

It still shuts off when pushing in the clutch but much less often.

But since I fixed that now the car under boost reads between an 8-9 afr which is far too Rich so I haven't been driving the car.
It also has been running a little more rich at a constant speed... Between a 13-14 when before is was a consistent 14-14.3

I talked to reed at sound performance and he recommended a pro efi for greater adjustablitity on well... Just about everything and he also said the utec just won't cut it for my goals

Glad to hear that helped, but it definitely still needs love if reading 8-9afr in boost.

We are ProEFI dealers as well, and while a standalone will give you greater adjustability it wouldn't be my immediate go-to for a 600cc setup, especially if the car was performing fine before. It sounds like a good look over the car and retune would go a long way on getting you back in business. That being said, there are some obvious advantages to upgrading to a unit like Haltech/ProEFI.

I'd be happy to walk you through leaning it out to proper for cruising and get you on the schedule for a tune. We are 300 miles from you, and I know it's not a bad drive from when Wongy was there.

Also one other thing.

Since this base map was uploaded I fixed two vacuum leaks.

Since this fix is starts better.
and doesnt shut off when coming to a stop. *yet*

but not under full throttle it hit about and 8 afr. way too rich so i havent been driving it

Also, in low RPMs if you give it too much throttle it will "bog" out or give kind of a fuel cut feel.

idle still surges a bit but not nearly as much. but AFR is around 13.5-14.2 seems a bit rich

and cruising is about a 13-14 afr

any thoughts and ideas are welcome!

I was able to get my photo shoot done though which makes me happy

So you are still over fueling?
I run the same utec, 600's and walbro on vortech with 2.87 pulley, SS intake, berk cats and APS 2.5 true dual. I am having major over fueling issues, hunting an stalling and need some direction or map to assist me tune my car. Unfortunately there are no tuners familiar with UTEC here in Antigua so any help from one and all would be most helpful

I'm putting in a fuel return system but that won't change the over fuel at a start but I just don't think the utec is capable of what I want I am waiting to finish up the design for the system I am making then taking the car home then upgrading to pro efi

I think Hal was on point, sounds all tune related... I run 750cc injectors on my utec and my car idles and drives like stock minus the stupid limp mode issue alot of utec owners have. I'm sure pro-efi will make you a happy camper

Ok just as an update....
Finished up the design and install for the fuel return system I made that will hopefully go into production in the near future*let me know if you are interested*

But after the install:
The hard start was fixed starts like a dream
when cruising at a constant speed the ajaring fuel cut like motion was also free and clear
and the engine dying when coming to a stop has not happened *yet* and hopefully wont happen again.

only thing i have noticed that i didnt like was when coming to a full stop the engine still dips down a little farther than id like. just barely below 500rpm I would like it not to dip down at all a just drop down to the regular idle speed at 500rpms.
