I know Eagle rods have been used in many builds in our community along with many domestics pushing close to 1000hp with success but just saw a pic posted by str8dum1 of a broken VQ block pushing close to 700hp as a result of eagle rods, correct me if I'm wrong?

Also I was wondering why Forged Performance made the switch to Manley H-beam rods in their S1 blocks?

Eagle rods are rated @ 1500 hp (not sure if thats over rated?)

Manley rods are rated @ 600-800 hp depending on rod bolts.

Which one would you trust if you were building a 700+whp VQ engine?

 

I’ve also been considering the Eagle and Manley rods for my motor build as I’m only shooting for 500-550whp (on E85), but that 1500 hp rating that Eagle’s throwing around does seem awfully high…

Although, if I was building a 700+ whp engine I’d look into Pauter or Carrillo

For my build though, it’ll probably come down to Eagle, Manley, or K1 perhaps…

At those levels, I think other things will break before the rods. I think either will be fine.

 

How does the rod have anything to do with a block breaking? Did you mean to say the rod broke?

over 600whp spend the extra money and get pauter or carrillo.

Unless eagle is going to buy you a new motor if their rod snaps at less than their bulls!t rated hp, its a losing bet.

In my opinion, Eagle significantly overrates their rods, and Manley underrates there rods. If you put the two rods in your hands, the difference is very clear in terms of final fit, finish, and prep. And when you mic up the working surfaces you see much better consistency and zero defects of any kind. And it's also comforting to know that Manly rods are finished in the USA, rather than overseas where quality control can be more difficult to manage and check. And just to be clear, Eagle rods are excellent as well, and I don't think anyone is going to have an issue with either rod in the 500-600whp range.

I thought str8dum1 was pushing close to 900 whp on Sharif's dyno. 900 whp on Sharif's DD dyno would be approximately 1200 SAE crank horsepower. And they survived the dyno. Just didn't last too long after... I guess that's still under the 1500 whp rating. Thanks for finding the limits of the Eagle rod, str8dum1! :d I guess I would go Carillo or Pauter next time around.

str8dum1, post up the dyno and the carnage in this thread! Also, aren't you concerned about the rotating mass since you want to go up to / past 8k rpms?

 

wasnt XKR at one time pushing over 800 on eagle rods? (i may have him confused with another person).

 

I think that's right - 800 whp on Sharif's dyno with an S1 short block with 850bb turbos.

 

i think that was a on a DJ. those are the rods that blew up and took an 5000$ shortblock with them.

 

didnt know that part ^^^^^ Im sure i wont ever be that high, but i am a fan on over building.. I would of guessed they would of taken more or at least that amount of power...

 

not to make light of it, but any short block is 5 grand when you factor in parts, labor, and machine work

 

XKR's eagle rods never gave way that I heard and I think maybe I was confusing the new build with his old one - not sure what he got maxing out the 850s... str8dum1's gave way running at 898 whp DD! Or did you turn down the boost after that dyno run?

 

im sure what ever happened there was not just the rods, eagle rods been over 1kwhp in other platforms.

 

^^^ agree,i know someone with eagle rods pushing 18 psi everyother day at just over 700whp....hes had a few things let go but never his rods.im thinking something else in contribution to the rods is what failed.im going the same route DD at 5-8psi 410ish-450ish whp and making my performance map 15psi should put me around 600whp

 

100% rod failure. other platforms dont mean squat. rod angle, etc is not the same.


thats fine, then by all means run eagle rods. Until you lose a motor, you dont realize what an extra few bucks in prevention is worth.
which kit is making 600 whp at 15psi?
