Default Retune @R/T Tuning, dyno + track slip inside

So I drove up to PA and let vince work his magic for a couple hours last Thursday. He was the only 'local' tuner that was fine working with my existing self-made street tune and let me leave with an unlocked ROM. Previous tune netted 12.6@111mph. New tune 11.9@119mph. Big thanks goes to Vince for going the extra mile battling my hyper-active turbos. .

What’s your track setup (tire, suspension, weight, etc.)?

If that dyno is displaying the before and after the tune, that’s a whole lot of trap to pickup from an additional 15 whp and 10 lbs. of torque!

I suck if I don’t break 11’s now! Lol…

ran a splash of race gas + no knock control by recommendation of Vince... long story short there is phantom knock all over the place as you can see on the graphs. I guess it made a pretty big difference D/A of -500ft surely helped as well...

full weight + tools and subwoofer. 26x11.5x16 Et Streets, 350Z S-techs, stock shocks.

what boost controller are you using? Did he adjust timing or wastegate duty cycle to get the turbos to spool faster? -500 is a great DA.

HKS EVC6. Vince messed with the settings a little but I didn't pay attention to what he changed. He added timing and cam advance down low which helped the spool. I'm now running 22-23 deg by redline (instead of 18). Apparently small TT setups like more timing up top than I thought.

big setups like timing up top as well. you just need the octane to do it.

glad ya made the trip up. Also nice when the car comes in with a good base map and allows us to fine tune and really dial in the ROM.....

for anyone who hasn't been to R/T before I will say they probably have the biggest shop I've seen, not to mention two dynos (dynojet 2WD and mustang AWD). deceptive from the outside...this place is legit.

djamps do you have any traction issues with the ET Streets or do they dead hook? Just wondering if a shorter slick would hold traction ie 24x8x15.

There are 8 second cars on a 10.5" Chester slicks. They will hold.

24" would put you well into 5th on a quick car and you want to avoid that shift if possible IMO.

No traction issues at all. It will either dead hook or slip a little (controlled) depending on track prep, tire pressure and burnout intensity. Sometimes I don't have to burnout at all.

Don't think that would happen. Even at 6500 4th gear will do 125mph at 7000 4th will net 135mph so 5th just won't happen.

Not sure your definition of QUICK but I netted a 10.85 @ 125 mpg on my Maxima and if I can get my G to do that I would consider it quick.

QUICK means different things for different people. For my purposes I only need to run 11.99 or quicker to run my race class. All of the guys in that class trailer their cars whereas I drive mine. I am a racer. Those who only go to the track to get a better time or T&T to try their cars hold no interest for me.

You are in the 350z forum. You said 24" tires which are 2" smaller in diameter than the stock tire size for the 350z. The transmission isn't the same as the maxima so 24" tires might get you only into 4th with the maxima but on a Z you will probably be in 5th if you run that small diameter tire. Most guys run 26 or 28" tall tires on the 350z/g35 to avoid having to shift at the end of the 1/4.

With my 26" tires I hit 120mph at 7krpm in 4th right as I cross the line. With a smaller tire, un-raised redline, or a faster car and I'd have to go to 5th.

I do own a G35 and those figures are using the FSM for ratios (which are the same for a 350Z) and a 3.69 rear which I plan on installing.

I believe the discrepancy is that I am referring to an auto not a manual. Drag racers have long given up on manual transmissions. An auto is much more consistent than a manual so racers have all gone that route. Not sure how the Z world is doing auto vs manual but my Maxima is almost 3/4 of a second faster than the closest manual in the 1/4 and a 1.58 60' vs a 1.7x for the manual and thats FWD.

At least on a G35, there's no way a 5AT will be consistently faster than a 6MT given all things equal including adequate traction, unless (as Alberto would say) the 6MT driver is suffering from palsy.

Drag racing is all about consistency not faster or quicker. Heads up racing is all but dead except at the top pro levels which no one here does. Bracket racing takes much more skill and a super consistent car to be a winner.

PS There are a LOT of drivers with Palsy.

Binder is right... tire diameter + gear ratio matters.. even at with the 26 you will end up on 5th gear if you go past 120mh...
