Default Best/Most reliable Standalone for Built TT Z?

Ok, I have a friend who has a fully built 350Z, VQ35, with a pair of 18G's. Full build on bottom end, but it hasn't run well in 2-3 years since the build. It was originally tuned in Maryland, but now has issues here in STL. He is running on a HKS F-Con pro, but no one locally seems to be able to tune with that platform. When he had his car built, there weren’t too many options for it out there.

He's been out of the game for a few years, and has since just let the Z sit, well I'm trying to motivate him to get it back up to square and start driving it again. He is considering ditching the F-Con pro, in favor of something more useful/reliable/dependable.

What is the absolute best bang for the buck Standalone Management system out there these days for these cars? The standard in the VQ industry, etc?

Haltech or even Osiris if he wants to keep costs/complexity minimal.

If you search way back you should be able to see what was or is the more common ECU solutions. Reliability has more to do with the tuner himself and how and where the unit itself is installed.

Of course, I definitely understand this, I just want to be able to reccomend him a platform that is tried and true, not a "cheap but awesome experiment" or "I heard this was good" etc...

I just want to know what everyone that makes 500+hp tunes with.

find a tuner for that fcon will be by far the cheapest route to go. Thats still a great EMS, its just locked. Any good Fcon tuner would be able to make that car run perfect.

Otherwise you are looking at close to 2 grand just for a haltech and sensors plus another full tune

Exactly, but no one has the unlock codes for the F-Con around here, and the closest place he trusts is in Maryland. After car shipping costs, it would be similar to the Haltech pricing, and then he has a more common, more useable platform for future tuning.

the tune wouldnt change between MD and STL. You guys sure its not a mechanical issue?

There have to be HKS protuners in the midwest, but the HKS website sucks.

Ya haltech is fairly standard platform and if you buddy is willing to drop a good bit of coin, thats the easiest route.

Yea, what's the overall opinion of Dynosty? they are fairly close to STL. And he could sell the F-Con, and make back some of the money being dropped on the Haltech.

We haven't confirmed that its a tune issue yet, hell I havent personally seen the car in 2 years lol. I'm not sure what he has done to go through it or not. But it runs perfectly good up top in high RPM, but runs PIG rich at standard cruising situations.

Dynosty branched off from Injected Performance last year I think and recently moved from Lexington to Louisville. My opinion (and I think this is fairly universal) is that Dynosty is top notch. I have never heard a negative report to date. Hal helped guide development for the US release of the Haltech. He has helped me implement new features with the Haltech several times. I think he's one of the smartest people I've met and a super nice guy to boot. I recommend you call and talk to Hal and see if he can help you unload the FCON - will be tough I think since its locked.

i'm in st louis and i use a haltech on my 650 hp g35.

are you on the stlsr forums?

I rent the dyno from eurotrix and do my tuning down there. He is an uprev osiris tuner so he could do that for you but it's not going to have near the function of a stand alone. No boost control, no wideband integrated, no recording integrated....so you will end up buying more stuff and not having a way to connect them into 1 program for ease of tuning.

Currently haltech or pro-EFI are the top 2 stand alones. If you are local here i can help you with Haltech and we are only about 4 hours away from Dynosty (injected performance) if you want to go have Hal tune it for you.

the newest haltech stand alone is 100% stand alone with no use of the stock ecu. This is pretty sick and I think i will probably switch over once it hits the market.

as for personal interface the haltech is simple to use as an end user product. From what i hear on others the pro-efi doens't have the same adjustability as what a licensed tuner gets and it isn't as user friendly.

I've been over to injected a number of times. I'm familiar with the shop and can talk to you about it if you want an opinion. if he just wants it tuned and left alone then it's a good choice to go over there and have it done right the first time. It's a long trip if he plans on making many adjustments or changing his setup around.

also, there isn't anyone that does fcon in the area. This is a domestic part of the US so it's hard to even find shops that tune imports let alone specific applications.
