Having a brand new seal leak isn't a common thing. It's common for seals to wear out since the crank is spinning in them but a brand new seal leaking is an install issue and not common. I've never had one leak on any of the engines I have done.

True. Its not like a stream of oil, I may have lost a cup or so in the first 20 miles of driving. It didn't start leaking until I drove it around.

Yeah, like I said, I probably messed it up when I installed it because I didn't give it the super duper extra careful attention that it apparently needs. I guess following the service manual to a T isn't good enough. Thanks Nissan...

If u installed the seal when it was on the engine stand like I did then either u lipped the seal or the spring popped off. Mine was lipped about 10mm across and took 1500 miles before started leaking. Since yours leaked on run in I suspect it is lipped quite badly. Best way to install is taking the dowel pins out which lets you push the seal on an angle on one side then slowly sliding over the crank. Once in push the dowels back in. Some swear that they were able to replace the main seal and half moon without removing the upper oil pan. IMHO I was unable to do it this way but was able to suspend the engine and drop the sub frame enough to pull out the oil pan. There is a thread on here that goes through this and is where I'm quoting from

I did it on the engine stand both with the upper pan in place once and with the upper pan removed all the other times. Never had a single issue.

If it's losing a cup then it's leaking a lot something is seriously wrong.

also, I only use oem nissan seals. The aftermarkets are junk for these cars.

Everything is brand new, oem Nissan.

Engine is back out. The seal looks perfect from the outside, I don't think it is lipped. We will see once I get the seal off. I'm hoping the spring came off, at least that would explain it!

Or the RTV seal on the backside didn't properly seal and it's leaking through there or the upper oil pan.
