Default 5 AT

...Spoke with Tim at speed force racing today..He said, "honestly, we don't do anything differently than the other guys do when building the 5 AT except replace the front input shaft bearing with a better unit...BUT we do it for 3499.00..about 1000 cheaper than IPT and others"...They use red altos, machine the drum to hold 2 more clutch packs etc etc...

For the 4l80e guys thinking of swapping, I bought a damaged 4l80e case from jakes and had it sent to Tim to see if and how well it fits the Z...He will put it in the tunnel of another z that was the engine out to check clearances...

Tim also uses VTR's adapter kit for GM variant transmissions and has them in stock (tans to engine block style adapter..uses GM TC

Can't decide on hughes, or jakes transmissions but that's a ways off.

Anyone know if there is a lightweight case for the 4l80e like reids for the TH 400? I'd like to try and lighten that sucker up a bit.

Just bought up a damaged trans to check it out? Wow! Pretty solid move man. Solid move. Hope it helps a few people trying to make power with the AT. (Including you lol)

Default damaged 4l80e

tks Eno...Hopefully, I can also get an idea of how deep a pan can be run, estimate driveshaft length and look for possible areas to make a new trans mount...

Hopefully, I can get a good idea from photos of th400 trans mounts.

Still. it's an expensive move....for a badass fully built trans with light internals, TC, compushift, shifter, driveshaft mount install, tuning etc...I'm thinking about 10-12 G's would be a decent price..
trans 4-6k, TC 1000-billet lockup, electronic box 800 or so, shifter 300?? driveshaft??? labor the rest..

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but that's what I guesstimate.

Anyone have an idea on driveshaft cost? I think I have seen people go with AL for these cars with GM trans swaps..

When I talked to John he doesn't use Red Altos... He says there is better out there and those are 'cookie cutter' ... He didn't really tell me what he uses but says it's hands down better than the altos... I was kinda taken aback that he didn't fill me in on 'what's better' but... I did some searching and feel comfortable with what he does... I am keeping my TC from edge racing and maybe even the transgo VB since they seem to shift really well and crisp....

He will check everything out when it gets there and let me know whats up.

GL Ogie, sounds like a project there...

I'm not looking at going that extreme of a route and want good reliability and drivability out of this build... Sure is taking a LOT out of my butt so I sure hope so anyways!

Tranny is now out of the car and waiting for pick up to go to IPT...

^^ That's just a generic pic actually for illustration only... He took that pic about 10 years ago.

He assured me that he doesn't use alto reds.

Tranny got there today and they are about to get working in her...

Yeah, seems to be the 'rule' of building.... If it can happen it will happen... At least it has to me pretty much in this build.

I'll keep it in mind if anything happens.... Crossing my fingers tho that it doesn't!

(ps) talked to John again at IPT about the red altos and he assured me he doesn't use that 'crap' (as he eluded to) in his tranny builds that he does at his shop.

IPT is not very forthcoming and have had customer service issues reported in other forums but hopefully you will be fine at your power level Triji. That said, there probably are better frictions out there vs Red Eagles (Altos), e.g. http://www.raybestospowertrain.com/r...line/frictions

The primary way to create more holding capacity is to increase the number of frictions. Most will use aftermarket thinner frictions, creating more surface area in same space. It would be great to pair that with machining new drums to accommodate more frictions but I'm not sure anyone has been so ambitious for our Jatco 5AT.

My belief is that our 5ATs fundamentally don't maintain the high line pressures required at high rpm to prevent the clutch from slipping. No one has a solution for this to my knowledge, which is why I gave up on the 5AT beyond 550 whp.

There is much more R&D on the domestic transmissions, 4l80e and 6l80e included. I would consider paddle shifted versions of those if you that route ogie.

Default tranny's

Im thinking more of the TH400..all adapters are available, its be done numerous times and a friend of Tims close to SFR that does the SFR 5at's builds the domestics also....driveshaft can be made locally in San Diego and the VTR adapter kit is available as well, so....Ill miss not having and OD and electronic shifting but the car is a toy and it doesn't have to pbe perfect ..just something to get me rolling quicker...I have contemplated the 4l80e but its a heavy bastard...does have more customization aspects though with electronics.......I haven't pulled the trigger yet but Im very close...

will still have an IPT for sale...somebody push me into the Gm tranny by buying this IPT from me...PLS!!!LOL

honestly bro if your gona go that route i would just swap over to the OD trannys, if you get one of the stand alone controllers shouldnt be much extra work and you still get highway driveability. or mayby just a gear vendors unit

Default I hear ya

yea Jerry, I hear ya....I just rationalize to myself that the 3.3 FD will help a little and I can just drive 70 instead of 80 on the freeway...I don't drive any distance at all in the thing..just a weekend toy ....but...like I said, I have decided yet but Im workin' on it...... were you still keeping with our PM conversation on going with the 2.75/1.57/1.0.0.82 setup or sticking with the 2.48/1.48/1.0/0.82 in either transmission (of course no OD in 4l80e....

Any brand paddle shifter you'd recommend? besides bell, F1...controller? shifter? LOTS of variables to work out....

Looking for clues.

SORRY FOR THE THREAD STOMP TRIJI))

iirc was recommending the 2.75 since you get good torque multiplication still with the 3.3 and still get a decent amount of first gear speed from it and should get you through the 60 foot in first gear. really think its the best of all the worlds since you get good torque, good speed, good spool since its halfway between stock and the 2.48

i know tci makes both a controller and paddle shifter, and GM performance parts offers a controller albeit a much higher cost and mayby paddle shifters i know they used to but not sure if they still do. theres a few of them on summit/jegs

Default 2.57/1.57

2.75/1.57 WORTH THE EXTRA 1000.00 charge to switch out the planetaries? heard some of the aftermarket manufacturers' gearsets are weak..cant remember whose.....waiting on the trans shop to call me back with more info....tks bud!

ahhh is that what it was? ehhhhh its a toss up in that case sorry couldnt remember since ive had to delete my inbox a couple times so many messages. the increased load of the other gearset COULD mayby offset the torque multiplication but unlikely it would provide the same benefit of the 2.75 torque multiplication.

now is the performance difference worth it? that would be down to you if your willing to spend the extra $1000 and its hard to quantify since you arnt going to be able to find a setup just like yours with both setups.

i can say though that you could potentially use a 4l60E-4l70E instead of the 4l80e. the prior 3 transmissions come with a 3.06 first gear but depending how quick your able to get up to speed the trans might have to shift to second in the 60 foot.

personally i would prob pay the money but then again im all about extracting everything i can to have a good all around setup instead of specialized in one specific area.

oh yah sorry myself but mayby others can get some help from it too.
