Default Life expectancy of turbos

How long are they going to last? Do you change yours at a set mileage or do you wait for tell tale signs that they are going bad? Thanks.

depends entirely on how you treat them, if your good to them expect at least 100k life span, if bad they may not last more than 10k.

If your bov is adjusted properly and you don't starve them for oil they should last the life of the car.

Signs of them going bad, Motor burining oil. If the seals on the shaft go oil will get into the compressor housing and be sent off to the cylenders to be burnt.

Shaft play, If your compressor wheel is touching the wall of the compressor housing or moving in and out a lot your turbo needs a rebuild.

cool thing is even a rebuild on a turbo is cheap, and when its done it is practically a new turbo, or it could be an excust to get bigger ones!

Change oil/filter every 3000miles with a quality synthetic oil, and establish proper cool-down practices, and the turbos should last the life of the motor. 100K or so.

As you can tell from my sig, I have had my twin turbo for 10 years and have 125K miles on them. They are going as strong as new.

Here are the 2 secrets I believe saved my turbos:

1 - Changed oil every 3000 miles religiously (engine and turbos share the same oil in the Stealth)

2 - Always let my engine warm up for a couple of minutes and ALWAYS let them cool down for at least one minute. That can be achieved either with patience or a turbo timer (which costs under $100)
