Default 105 Octane

Is it safe for us F1 guys to run 105 Octane in our cars.. A local station here sells it for 7.19 / gallon.

you wouldn't need to pull as much, if any, timing on 105

The way it works is that higher octanes normally equal lower combustion temperatures. Lower temperatures normally equal more efficient running. This may or may not pay off in terms of dollars spent per litre of fuel, but wait, there's more. Especially (but not limited to) in forced induction cars (turbo or supercharged engines), intake temperatue is greatly raised by the compressor. This yields a higher in-cylinder charge temperature. Higher temperatures can alter the point at which the fuel combusts, as at high temperatures you can get premature combustion.

So I guess the idea is I must have a custom R4 MAP to run the higher octane fuel to avoid “Kaboom”

higher octane allows more of a pillow in regards to the kaboom. The higher the octane, the more resistant the fuel is to normal (ie 91 here in colorado, 93 in cali etc) octane ratings. The mean temperature for combustion goes up higher as the octane rating goes up to make it more resistant.

in other words, youre engine will be a lot safer with your current tune w/ 105 octane, but you could always run more boost (since you have a higher combustion temperature threshold) or put timing back in for more power gains.

So if you are sure about this then could I do the following? ½ tank 93 octane + 105 octane ½ tank = est 100 octane without any mapping changes or A/F problems...

Thanks

DWF, is the 105 octane stuff unleaded? Most I've seen in unleaded is 100-102octane. If its unleaded, its totally safe for your car. If it is leaded...then dont use it, becuase the lead will destroy O2 sensors and cats in short order.

You can run higher octanes without mapping changes....it's essentially giving you a greater safety margin against detonation.

I routinely run 100 octane gas, which is at around $3.40 a gallon here. Mainly for the ease of mind.

$7.19 a gallon is crazy expensive. Just find some 100octane for about $4.00 or less per gallon. Personally, I think anything above 100 octane is kinda overkill...if your goal is just to fend off detonation in the sub 10psi boost range.

I have been trying to find a station in my area that sells anything higher than 93. So far I have not had any luck except for the place noted above.

Default 105

Well today I put in 10 gallons of 105 Unleaded “Synthetic Fuel” and all I have to say is "holy shi#$" It makes my car scream. Although I wish the price was better all that is available in my area is 93 at about 2.00/g or 105 at 7.19/g. So 75 dollars later my ride is very happy. Perhaps as time goes on I will mix 5 gallons to every other tank just for fun.

What about Octane Boosters?.

Are ther any octane boosters that we can add that are safe and effective?.

From my perspective it’s hard to say. I owned a 2001 Dodge Viper and I ran 104 Outlaw in with every tank of gas for a while and did not notice a difference. Although that was a totally different motor etc.. Nothing I have ever added to my tank has made a car have such a noticeable improvement. It’s just expensive for your everyday driver. Anyone else with experience on this please chime in.

Commercial octane boosters are a rip off. Get some pure toluene from a paint supply store and add it to your tank. There has been considerable discussion on this subject in previous threads. Run a search on "toluene" and you should be able to find all the info you need.
