Question Turbo Motor Buildup Questions (Long post)

I am now being depolyed to Iraq, and with all the money I have saved up along with all the money I'll have when I get back (13-20 months) I will buy a turbo kit and everything needed to build up my Z to be a daily driver working between 450-550hp, and pump gas. So here are my questions.

1.) The turbo kit I am interested in getting is the APS system. Is there a better kit for a daily driver or is this one good enough?.

2.) After reading all the threads about using low comp. pistons, what comp. ratio should I go for daily use?. I like 8.5-1, but I see some of you are using 9.0-1 would that be better? and why?.

3.) I know tuning is a big issue with our motors. What engine management system would everyone recomend? (ECU & Sensors). I saw what phunk did with the HKS goodies, and have been reading alot on HKS's site on the F-Con. Is that too much?, and is there something more practicle for daily use?.

4.) Any suggestions on the fuel system would be great. What FPR, Pump, Injectors, etc would everyone suggest?.

5.) I know guages are an important thing. I know an A/FR guage is important, along with boost. any other guages you could suggest?.

6.) Am I missing anything? all the other thing are pretty much obvious (rods, studs, stickers that will add 10-20hp )

Your answers and suggestions are greatly appreciated. I do have a good amount of automotive knowledege, and have a good understanding on our Z, I just need some outside help on my plans for my car. Thank you everyone in advance for your help and suggestions.

P.S. Constructive criticism is welcome

1)Good choice on the APS kit. By itself it will solve a lot of you're questions and concerns. From all the info on the APS thread it seems to be set up as a good overall driver with excellent off boost driveability but I want to wait and see a couple installed and hear some reviews before I come to any conclusions.
2) I myself am going with 9:1 compression , but it's personal choice. There are different philosophies as to what comp ratio is better for boost.
3)Aps comes with a full engine management piggyback including fuel and timing solutions
4)APs kit comes with the fuel system as well...but you could look at Altered Atmospheres return line system as an option.
5) I would get some gauges... Oil press, boost, EGT for sure.
6) Think about a clutch option

Just one more thing .......come back safe.

By the time you get back (here's to a safe return, btw), I'm sure there will be people who have boosted the APS kit up to 15psi or whatever. If you're looking for a maximum of say 550rwhp then the APS fuel system will likely meet your needs with larger injectors. For your goals it is the most complete kit and is arguably the best choice (or will be when it ships). As for how you'll tune it, that remains to be seen since the APS kit isn't out yet.

Thanks for the responses guys.

What about boost controllers. I think the E-01 is cool but I kinda like the HKS EVC better. What would you suggest?, or do I even need one if I go with the APS management system?. Thank you.

Apparently the APS system does not come with a boost controller. They have the piggyback tuned for set boost levels. You have to go to an authorized APS dealer in order to get the tune changed for a different boost level.....or purchase new maps from the APS dealers and download them.

That kinda sucks. I don't really plan on doing any kind of tuning myself since I don't have the experience, but I would like to learn sometime. Thanks for the info thoe.

I also noticed that SGP came out with valves, are they the same or different as the ferrera valves everyone is buying or are they different?. And what cams would everyone suggest. I like the tomei cams at 264 duration or should I look at something a little more milder?

Would anyone else like to comment?.

If you live in an area were 93/94 pump is available i'd go with a CR of ~9:1.

If you live in an area were only 91 pump is available i'd go with a CR of 8.5:1.

IMO

SGP built a monster engine based on the GReddy TT kit using their valves and the Tomei 264's. They seemed to be very happy with the combination. Not sure about their source for the valves....maybe give Kyle a call and he can tell you who the supplier is.
