Default Test Drive G37, First impressions

My dealership had the G37S in since the Mon of last week. I went to look over the car and had a chance to sit and evaluate the car. Exterior looks many have had varying opinions. I personally like the Mercedes S-class sweeping headlamps..nice touch. The rear end, well the tail lights will have to take some getting use to. I feel this is just the evolution of the vehicle. Don't get me wrong the car still has the same shape as our coupes, and is very nice looking when compared to ours.

Interior....what can I say.....NICE!!!!!! Infiniti really did a nice job with bringing over the M's center console into the G-coupe and sedan. Door panels better laid out with a little more leather on it and less plastic and with the mirror adjustment now located near the power windows. The Bose stereo works well and there is FULL iPod integration into the new Bose system....nice!!!! The seats are nice and comfortable and plenty of leg room for the rear passenger, however headroom is limited.

Okay, this is what you have been waiting for. The car had about 80 miles of the speedo, 40 more than when I first saw it, push button start and the car fired right up. Exhaust tone was QUIET at idol. My friend who was there said it didn't sound like our current G35C exhaust note.

The car was already warmed up from previous drivers I put into gear and we were on our way. There were 3 occupants in the car with the air conditioner blasting away. I first tried the electronic shifting manually and it was nice and smooth, definitely an improvement. I then tried the fixed paddle shifters and they were equally nice, especially in the straight aways. In all cases, I only took the car up to 5K RPM's and shifted into the next gear. With 3 people and the AC on, the car pulled but not like you would expect, the power transfer and the torque was smooth. Under acceleration the exhaust note was there but subtle, once again my friend even remarked it was not the G-coupe baritone sound , everyone is accustomed to hearing. The steering was LIGHT, I still like our steering over the g37, our cars have a better feed back, I read in the one of the automotive mags that Infiniti decided to use electric power assist....kind of sad. Steering was precise but no road feel. The brakes were great and really pulled the car to a stop.

Well, the overall feel of the G37 was good, but not good enough for me to trade in my 2004 G35C. For some reason, our cars seems to do a better job of connecting the driver to the road. The g37 is becoming more luxurious and I feel they will leave behind the edge that once made this car...the car.

Very nice review, it seems most of the pure rawness of the G that made it close to our sibling the Z has been taken away with this new car. I understand that Infiniti is a luxury car maker, but thats what made the G, the G.

Sounds kind of like what happened between the E46 and E92 M3

Interesting point of view. I feel the same way though. I like to have a nice car, but still feel connected to the road as well. Nice review. Your speed comparisons would have been cool though.

I was not impressed with the handling of the car. I did the close test drive and the car felt sloppy and loose. It took off nicely but when pushed the car felt to float and never felt connected to the road. Besides the looks of the car being changed along with the engine, they could have done a better job setting up the suspension geometry to suit the upgraded engine.

To me, it appears that Infiniti is following the route that Acura took when they axed the RSX and NSX and now are more predominantly focused on luxury versus performance. And with the GT-R coming to Nissan, they are even less compelled to fill a performance coupe niche. Same with Lexus and the IS350: looks great on paper, but performance is restrained by its luxury appointments.

Looks like a TC. There I said it. Nice to have the engine though.
