Calsonic makes all (or nearly all) of Nissan's exhaust systems. I only know because I work for another exhaust system supplier and my boss is an ex-Calsonic goon.

After inspecting the muffler when I wrestled it out to itstall the HKS...it did indeed have calsonic stamped into it. I immediately thought of the blue Calsonic race cars in Gran Turismo3.

The oem "calsonic" muffler in the Z is a single in...dual output(tip) design. The oe exhaust system consists of two cat coverters(one attach to each ex. manifold), then a y-pipe, then a single pipe w/resontator runs into the single input muff.

In other words...your not going to get a true dual setup with the stock muff.

If your really looking for a true dual system you'll have to go aftermarket.
Invidia G200, Injen SES, Borla, Stillen,Greddy EVO and Hks Hi-Power TI, are most of the major players right now in the bolt in, true-dual's market.

If you like the way your car sounds with the oe muff and just want to get a few extra ponies...you might just want to try adding a higher flow y-pipe first. Many guys here feel the y-pipe is the worst "choke point"(besides the cats) in an other wise well designed, free flowing oe exhaust. They simple replace it and are happy with the results.

Just because Calsonic makes the muffler doesn't mean that it's going to outperform a lot of aftermarket jobs.

Does Calsonic make the Nismo exhaust too? If so, why can't we go directly to the source, cut out the middle man, and come out of it with a cheaper exhaust similar to the Nismo piece?

Fujitsubo makes the NISMO exhaust and headers. Calsonic does consulting and manufactures OEM components.

Calsonic has a 350Z race car too!

Bose made the high end stereo and Clarion made the low end stereo and we all know they can make better stuff when not restricted by the bean counters.

The Calsonic system was made for a price, it does not have mandrel bends and the Y seems terribly short. For a factory system I would say it is better than average for getting the job done, as shown by the relatively low gains by the aftermarket.

This could be true other way around for some exhuasts. Also some of the exhaust companies might skimp on doing some real CFD and accoustic analysis to get the nearly ideal exhaust. In other words, all they could be doing is pipe bending.

My point is just because something is aftermarket doesnt mean its better than OE part.
