Custom build dual exhaust
Friend of mine is currently helping me to design dual exhaust system for my Z. He is Magnaflow dealer and has quite an experince making custom exhaust systems. He believes we can make things much better than they are now.
We are expecting power gains because of:
1. True dual design
2. Straight-through Magnaflow mufflers
3. Removed precilenser
4. Only 45D and lesser angles from front to rear.
To achieve this we are trying to fit mufflers into precilenser space. There is quite a lot of space there for two tubular side by side. There is even heat shield in place. Anybody know what such a location will do to the noise level inside the car?
Also is anybody will be willing to buy? It'll be stainless steel bolt-on replacement. See picture (not a real installation) for details. We are expecting 10+ HP gain, some weight saving, and of course reacher sound (but no screaming). We estimate price at around $1000

You'll probably want a crossover. True dual exhaust may be optimal performance-wise, but may end up making your Z sound pretty bad. You'll remember the 1st generation Viper had true dual exhaust and it sounded kind of like a truck.
Good luck!

Somehow I don't think it's that easy to get +10hp and a nice sound, without a lot of engineering and trial-and-error. But definitely give it a try and see what the dyno and people's ears say!

Their solution to this "problem" was simply to put an H pipe between both outlets.
Hiya guys and gals,
Since the car came out I have questioned why no one came out with a true dual exhaust or that would be cool. As the 90-96 had one right? If you look under the car it was planned for a dual exhaust of some sorts such as the heat shield, and extra hook mounting spot
Well with enough nagging and whining we prototyped the car with a company that has a certain intake out now
What we have found out that there was a power gain around 5-6hp if I recall.
Here are some of the problems that can be fixed fairly simply when creating a dual exhaust that I have seen.
1) You have to clear the sway bar, shouldn't be a problem its been done but need to watch clearance
2) The company had to flare out the tips and back pieces to make the small mufflers fit, I really don't prefer this look I like straight pipes coming out of the back of the car.
3) Its loud!! Presilencers will help quite a bit, but everyone is different
This exhaust will be out soon and I think will be around the 1G area. But if you guys can make one that sounds good and gains the power you claimed go for it!

I know that you are technically providing 2 exhaust systems from the pics and how you describe this (true DUAL exhaust) but if its from a name like magnaflow, the price has to get way down there. I have heard both good and bad things about magnaflow fitment on other vehicles (scraping mufflers on stock height cars due to poor design layout - bad, excellent price to performance gains - good) Definitely reconsider keeping the price realistic and not just jacking it up due to the limited availability of our vehicles.
BTW, my friend had a FULL custom dual exhaust (with new cat's) for cost of parts (550 dollars) and then the labor charges (150 dollars). And his system was providing a lot more dyno proven power gains then more expensive prepacked bolt-on kits.
700 dollars for a pair of cat's, 2 mufflers, custom piping and labor for a one-run exhaust system that outperforms prepackaged kits.
I dont know if he was cut a deal on it or not but he definitely found one when he had this done.

I think the viper also fires 2 cylinders at a time, hence the 5 cylinder sound.
Also, Honda 4cylinders fire 2 at a time, but do they sound like 2cylinders?
Right now there is 3 problems to solve:
1. To find dynometer. The one I know is 50 miles away, and they charge $125 minimum for an hour. Not particulary practically if we want to experiment. Anybody know some place in Grand Rapids, MI?
2. To clear swaybar safely by two pipes. Which can be done theoretically.
3. Noise lewel. Crossover and/or two more small mufflers are an options.
The first problem is the biggest. I wish I were living in Detroit... But then I really don't
By the way, it's all called R&D. It costs money. And then some people immediatelly claimed final system to be sold at cost of parts and labor. Why bother developing then?
