Default pop charger or other intake?

i always see the pop charger all over this site...just wondering if there is a difference between a pop charger and other intakes....i guess i'm kinda curious why everyone and their mom has one on this site....not making fun of them by any means, just curious

I'm thinking about getting a popcharger too. From what I've read, the JWT popcharger is by far the easiest to install. I think it's also the cheapest too. Plus apparently it sounds really good at WOT.

oh man, watch out for the repost police... I asked around (performance shops) and I kept getting the same answer. Pop charger and air intakes are the same thing but different names. Besides the JWT, I don't think there are any other brands of pop chargers. The name and the sound it makes (I hear) sound cool too.

And if I'm wrong, well then I need to get out of my house more often.

1. You don't have to remove the bumper to install the popcharger.
2. You don't have to remove the bumper to clean the filter.
3. People don't always want to replace the plastic tube with a metal tube heat sink.
4. People who want to get the varis air duct to compliment the look of their cars and the short air ram(pop charger).

You just answered 4 of my 5 questions I was about to ask. Do you have to go underneath the car to do maintainance on the popcharger (clean it, change it, caress it)?

i still don't quite understand how an engine cabin housed filter sucking up hot air is very effective. i have had experiences with short rams on various cars and they were not that great...maybe the vq35de is different?

What is your 5th question?

ANyhoo, take a read on this review and dyno on the popcharger: http://www.nissanperformancemag.com/june03/350pop/

"Not wanting to mess around we put the car on the dyno immediately and recorded the biggest gains we.ve seen on any 350Z yet: 6.5 hp at the wheels! The driving difference was noticeable, springing a welcomed quickness to redline. To say we were amazed is an understatement. It.s not that we.ve ever been let down by the POP-Charger but it usually gets out-gunned by the fully piped Cold Air Intake. What a welcomed discovery: the most affordable intake modification we.ve tested makes the most power."

cvt, Don't know, read the above link. Plus, I knew from teh very start that I would get a varis air duct that will send direct cold air to the popcharger. So I knew I didn't want the other cold air intake setup.

That is just opposite to my experience. The short ram intakes compared to getting an extension and making them true "cold air" kits usually produce negligant gains. The JWT pop charger afaik, dynos close numbers, if not same numbers, as many of the other cold air intakes. My friend has a nismo, and god help him when it comes time to clean his filter....its going to take him at least 2 hours to do it. Mine will take me about..oh, 5 minutes maybe.

The thing that I think makes the most difference from intake to intake is the different sounds each intake provides. My friends nismo, for example, in comparison to my JWT pop charger sound wise goes like this:
1. His engine is louder and higher pitched.
2. The JWT has a louder, more audible "whoosh" (I guess becuase it is closer to the cabin)
3. His nismo, IMO, with all the tubing looks way cooler.
4. At 4k and up, the JWT starts screaming..the nismo is consistantly loud.

Those are my observations of the two. I have another freind with a black convertible 350z who has the K&N typhoon, and it is alot louder than both the JWT and the Nismo. My deciding factor in an intake, knowing what I know now, would be the sound instead of power gains. All of them pretty much produce the same numbers, but each one produces GREATLY different sound from one another.

hmm..it just seems hot air defeats the purpose of an intake. i thought the purpose of an intake is to recieve lower ambient air since colder air is denser and would produce power...again i am new to the vq35de and may not be looking at things the right way.

Of course there is a difference in intakes, and the difference is design.

Where do you want the filter? Inside or outside the engine bay?

Where do you want the air to come from? Inside or outside the engine bay?

The pop charger may be described as a “short ram.” There are a dozen other “short ram” type intakes on the market. Yes you do need to get out of the house more (or search Froogle for “intake 350Z” and “CAI 350Z.”

My apologies. I misunderstood your question. “Pop Charger” is a registered name by Jim Wolfe Technologies. No one else can use the name. Other manufactures can create a duplicate intake, they simply can’t call it “Pop Charger.”

I prefer the pop charger to most other intakes out there. It's a nice and cheap mod and it will help give you some extra hp, (about the same power increase as all other intakes out there for the car). It's easy to install, remove for cleaning, and you don't have to worry about water issues or jacking the car up to remove the filter to clean etc... It makes things much easier, plus it lasts a long time with normal cleaning....... Basically it's good for your money IMO
It's our #1 selling intake for the Z

Have you seen pictures of the JWT popcharger? It is inside the engine bay. If you have to under the car to clean it....oh well.

Oh believe you me, you're not the only one. Besides, we were all there once. In fact, I still find myself there every now and then

If you look at the stock air box and how it sucks in air before the radiator.... IMO, the stock can be argued to be a form of a Cold Air Intake. I think one of the reasons the popcharger can perform so well compared to a traditional CAI is because it uses that hole on the frame to suck in the "unheated" air. Plus, what makes the popcharger nice is that it has less bends than a traditional CAI. Everytime you are forcing air to turn a bend or a corner, you're going to have some loss in effiency.

The first night I installed my popcharger, holy crap, it sounded like the car was screaming.... and when you tap the gas, and u can hear that whistle sound or when ure at 4k and ure just letting the engine stay up at that speed, it kinda sounds like a turbo.... not bad for 109 shipped, it was a deal. Kinda wish Jim made an exhaust too. Anyways, thats my 2 cents.
