Default Exhaust violation tickets?

Anyone here ever been ticketed for running test pipes on the street?? I hear it is a $2500 fine? ?

In this state, they do not have annual inspection requirements, only random. I've never heard of any law enforcement randomly inspecting equipment anyway.

Other than crawling on the road and looking underneath to see the deleted cats, do they use an ozone detecor at the exhaust to test?

Hard to believe anyone would pay $2500 for cat less pipes... I see dip**** truck owners running straight pipes and sometimes open headers.

the federal fine is per cat, rarely i have seen where they pull over a group of cars into a lot, check paperwork and put a mirror under cars, some folks just hollow out a cat by running a pipe through it....

dont know... i just know that you can get emissions violations by running straight pipes... also they have another reason to check your exhaust if the sound passes 93 dB. well thats the law here in cali anyway.

The legal limit is 95db...and the meter needs to be at least 18" from the exit of the exhaust while the engine is held at 3/4 of the rpm range.

I honestly believe that many of the sitations are BS...though some citations are blatantly obvious...but in general, the human ear can not determine db levels...

yeah your emissions lawes are different... in cali your car HAS to be at least LEV2 compliant or else it wont pass smog... thats why our octane rating is lower than most other states (we have 91 octane while others have 92 and above).. cali emissiona are tough nowadays.

Gotta hate those emissions tests, glad we dont have them here. but they could be azz's if you were doing sumthin wrong and give an extra charge for having no cats, ive seen it a few times here.

A friend of mine with a modded WRX got an exhaust referee ticket. I think he just put his stock exhaust back on and was ok.

His car wasn't even that loud... the cop was probably just an ***. Obviously this is in socal.

I raised the question about 91 octane last month... apparently Wal-Mart's onsite fuel stations (Murphy Oil) call "Premium" 91 octane, while every other company offers 93. I thought it was a ripoff, but I guess this is why.

In this part of the world, we are not supposed to use it, but it is offered. They have sulpher fuel or "farm use only" fuel that costs about 87 cent per gallon and is about 81 octane. No way I'd ever put any of it in the Z, but when regular is $2+, it makes an interesting option at the end of the month.

If you run 104+ octane with resonated test pipes, it would be difficult to tell without instrumentation.

Anyway, so whats the best deal on resonated test pipes? What do we see in HP increase??

if your car is registered in cali, its gotta pass emissions. if you are visiting california from another state i believe you can stay here for a certain period of time and then you either have to go back or register your car here or something. but if you are visiting then i dont think the emissions apply to you.

There was a CNN or Yahoo Finance story the other day that it seems octane will probably be going back up as refineries are scrambiling to sell off their MTBE laced fuel as it is no longer going to be used. One reason sited was that it eats through pipelines it is transported through. (imagine what it will do to your car's internals). I've lost the link, as if it were yanked off the archives. Hell I just read it yesterday.

For what it's worth, CA gives a lot of discretion to the cops. they can pull you over if your exhaust sounds kinda loud. and then they have prob cause to check you for all sorts of things even if on the db your not over the limit. i've read CA appeal cases allowing cops to do this.

I just recently purchased an RS*R exhaust and have to start worrying about cops...it sucks, but the sound makes it all worth it. If i get a ticket can't i just go put my silincers on and pass the decibal test?

it gives cops probable cause to look underneath the car and see if your running straight pipes or running without a resonator. if the cop isnt a dick then youll just get a fix it ticket, or maybe a modified exhaust ticket. if he is the court can refer you to a referee. thats when it becomes a headache
