Default PIT Exhaust installed.. hmm..

So I just got the PIT exhaust installed on my z today (its the $300 exhaust).

I've been having a problem with something in my z making a really loud clicking/clanking sound, so thats been pissing me off. I think it might have affected my opinion of my exhaust sound.

So the sound is pretty good, I don't know if I love it though. The only concern I have is that the right exhaust tip is more angled than the left.. looks strange. I don't know if it was the installer's fault or just the exhaust being cheap..

I'm scared, thinking I should have spent 300 more and gotten a Borla.. I just don't know if a Borla actually sounds much better. Is there anyone really close to either Malibu or Calabasas with a Borla that I could meet up with?

Anyway, I'm going to take pictures right now of the exhaust tips, tell me you can see what I'm talking about..

Almost forgot, there is the most horrible sound of a.. I don't know.. a tin can.. when I first start the car and rev. It happens about 4k, but whats wierd is it goes away after a few minutes of driving. But its sounds disguisting.

And the picture of the tips (can you guys see how the right one is angled right too much? Cell phone pic, and a badly taken pic in general, might be hard to tell).

the tin can sound is RASP & it goes away after the metal in the exhaust heats up & can't/doesn't vibrate as much.
as for the angle your right, its off by alittle.

ps: the borla is loud on a n/a z

Might get laughed at for even asking this, but I honestly don't know. Would the vendor I bought from allow me to return the exhaust for a refund, if I pay for shipping? Reason being that the exhaust tips aren't angled correctly. And that I don't like it.

Right, RASP is what you're hearing

and the reason why the Apexi/PIT exhaust does that is because there is no resonator in the mid-piping........ install one and it will sound much smoother

The location of the exhaust tips are fixed. Meaning that when you hang the rear part, there is no adjustment. Also, they cannot be hung wrong.

I figured something out. The sound doesn't have anything to do with the clutch. Its when I press and release the gas pedal. If my foot is off the pedal, no clicking noise. When I then press down, the noise happens (it will keep going as long as I am between 2k-3k rpms or so). As I let go of the pedal, the sound stops for a split second, and then occurs for a few sounds, but in a higher pitch. Kinda sounds like something is 'unwinding'... not a good way to describe it but maybe that makes sense to someone. Anyway, a few seconds after letting go, the clicking stops.

The other thing is, it is def. linked to how cold the engine is. This morning, it was very cold, and the clicking was loud and happening almost then entire drive to school. But in the afternoon, I drove to lunch, and on the way back it stopped.

Ideas??

i had to trim my heat shield because it would clink up against it due to bigger piping. it is on your passenger side. it is a commonly done mod by guys using a bigger exhaust. i took a dremel and just cut the corner off and no more noise.

dingobiatch,

I can't really see what you are talking about in the pic......but I would hate for it to be off on my car and would not accept it. I would mod or adjust it.

I feel for you. Perhaps it's a lesson learned on "you get what you pay for." Sometimes it's better to save a few more bucks ang get what you know is good vs. getting it now and regretting it. Anyway, good luck in finding a solution.

I'm getting the HKS true dual ti to replace the PIT. :-P
I know, big price difference. Just graduated, got lots of modding money.

EBoostonline.com, the guy who I got the PIT from, is being really cool, he is letting me return the PIT. I'm hoping he isn't too angry, I'm hoping to wait until I have the HKS, so that I can get it installed at the same time as removing the PIT.
But yea, great vendor. Not so great exhaust, but very understanding vendor. :-P

Always good to hear about vendors that support their customers. I've never dealt with those guys, but I guess I can take them off my "questionable" list.

IMO, its an awful looking and awful quality exhaust, you really SHOULD have paid that extra $$ for the borla instead; even though i'm not a borla fanatic

I just installed the pit exhaust and to be honest with you all i have not had one problem and am confused to what your talking about...so far it sounds great, yea i do get that rasp, but gas it through second gear for 3 seconds and it goes away, the mufflers are a little differently placed but nothing huge. overall i think i got the best bang for my buck.

As for the exhaust. You pay for what you get. Install a resonator at your local muffler shop and the sound should be better.
