Default Safe to run K&N filter unoiled?

Cleaned my filter, wondering if I can run it without oil, in order to get some better airflow. Is this safe? Element looks pretty good at filtering, even without oil.

I recall the K&N literature being pretty explicit about not doing that.

What differentiates this filter from dry filters then?

A dry filter uses a finely woven paper element that is good at filtering but restrictive as soon as it starts getting dirty and eventially clogs. The K@N is made with a Cotton Fiber that is far less finely woven and nonrestrictive. To compensate for that, u use the oil which sprays wet but drys sticky.
The Cotton Fiber is like a skeleton that holds what does the filtering. The Oil.

if you want better airflow, run no intake - you might gain 1 hp if the stars align correctly

the K&N is a wet type filter - it relies on the oil to be effective

The oil ATTRACTS dirt and particles, the fibers do not generally STOP dirt and particles unless they are able to attract it.

go to any place that sells KN and they will have the KN oil in a spray----People may bust on me for this but I clean mine by running it thru the dishwasher, then letting it air dry in the sun.

A K&N filter, as stated above, needs oil to function properly. It occasionally needs to be cleaned (depends on your driving conditions) by rinsing it thouroughly and allowing it to dry, then re-oiling it. EDIT: as mentioned above, any large auto parts store (Advance, NAPA, etc) sells the reoil kit. Hope that helps.

It comes with oil on it. As mentioned, if you need to clean it (and you do, every few months) you should get the filter recharge kit which includes a spray on oil and possibly a cleaning solution.

Be sure not to over-oil it

+1 on not over oiling it. Can make car run funny/shut off or throw a CEL if you get too much oil on the MAF/IAT.

I don't think that's necessary, ... instead of letting it dry in the sun, why don't you just use JETDRY?

Kidding aside, I'm sure others use this technique... I just take the hose (set to light spray) and wash it inside-out. I then set it on newspaper for some good old sun baking. I just mist it with the oil, enough to cover it thoroughly. It will get on your MAF sensor if you saturate it

yep - I personally use the K&N cleaner, let it sit for a few minutes, then run it under the faucet here at the shop. Once the filter is clean from debris (as the water rinses through it you'll see it get clearer, meaning it's clean). From there, I let it air dry for an hour or so, then you gently mist the oil from the recharge kit onto the filter, till it's just pink. Let the filter stand up and down for a few minutes so any excess runs off, wipe the base, reinstall, done

Try installing one of those Oreck Air Purifiers right on to your plenum...then you won't need your K&N
