I noticed from my Z and my friends Z his 04, his silver thing is more backed into the engine so he doesnt have this problem, is this okay? Here are pics

thats the part that controls the variable cam timing. and yes this is NOT normal. Without being there to look at the car, the only thing i can think is that the 06 z's have variable cam timing on the exaust and intake sides so that piece that its touching may not even be on the 04 z that your friend has. But dont quote me because i have only had my Z for 2 weeks before i deployed to iraq so i am still learning this motor too and because i cant physicly be near a VQ35 and VQ35rev-up, i cannot compare the two but you can! good luck and hope this helps.

Cant you just bend the shield so it wont touch the motor their anymore. I am also pretty sure that isnt the starter.

Oh thats definitely not the starter. Perhaps you should read through your owners manual a little and look at the pix of your car to learn the layout of it.

I also think you should be able to bend the metal alittle so its not rubbing about your motor. Or try bending the bracket a little.

nope, not the starter, lol. its the piece that controls the variable cam timming. its kinda like adjustable cam gears that adjust by themselves depending on load and ect, ect. it actually pretty cool i think.but like he said, if you dont really care about bending the shield then just do that but i would first check with other 06 owners that have a JWT pop charger and see what they did.

im not sure but i think if you look at any 04 and below Z, they only have 2 of those cam timing things and the 05 ann and 06 have 4.???

I don't think you have any serious need for concern.

If you can adjust it so that the heat shield is not touching anything, that would be better. But the worst thing that could happen seems like bad smell from burning rubber.

The heat shield should not be touching anything attached to the motor. First, you need to adjust the bracket holding the cone to move the cone away from the heat shield & towards the fender. Once you moved the cone, you can then move the heat shield towards the cone & away from the motor. If for some reason you can't adjust the heat shield, then remove it and use a hammer to make an indentation to create space where it's making contact.
