Default Better Heat Sheild for the Pop Charger

Summer is just about here in Cali.... has someone written up a DIY or know somewhere to buy a "cost effective" heat shield for the pop charger?

Let me rephrase, I want to keep the Popcharger, and I don't want to spend $200+ bucks for a stillen intake when my popcharger was half that.

Someone has made their own, but the details of the project elude me. Let me see if I can find the thread. Other than DIY, your only options are what I listed above.

yea, I remember some guy used a rubbermaid like container. it sounds kinda ghetto, but it actually looked really good. If I remember correctly, there weren't any instructions..... =(

I wish I could help you Jondi, but the boxes I've created are more complex than people realize. Even if I supplied a template, it would be a PITA to replicate. I used a heat gun, pop-rivets and a lot of trial and error to get my boxes to friction fit in areas of the cavity. This new box I created for my FUJITA-5 setup is virtually air tight, I'm pretty happy with it!



I wouldn't go with the Stillen setup, there is a large hole in the bottom of the heat reflector. The radiator fans blow hot air right into it, lol!

does the fujita have a similar velocity stack that the pop charger has?

anyone done the research in viable plastics that are resistant/have high heat resistance.. i would think something with a ceramic coating (think your a/c vents) would have a good thermal protection..

i think people are probably suffering more from heat soak than actual warm air being sucked in? if thats the case.. vents in your hood ftw

I did measurements with cipher during a 1/4 mile run.

Basically, the engine bay started out heat soaked. It did not cool down to ambient until halfway through 3rd gear.

So for the first 2 gears, I was probably down about 15-20hp ...


Zquicksilver - that intake looks really nice. I'm also interested in what kind of velocity stack that thing has.

^^ No, I wish it did. But what it does do is eliminate the rubber-accordion and MAF housing, smoothing the airflow into the TB.

HDPE (high density polythylene) is failry stiff and cabable of tolerating high temps. Its a plastic used for garbage cans, detergent bottles, toys and wire insulation to name a few.

The problem... the hood when shut creates a seal. If you have any gapping around a heat shield or holes, its going to draw in that hot air. This is why the OEM box is so effective, it seals out the engine bay heat and only allows air in from inlet within the frame. All my box does is replicate this OEM setup, and it give me the room necessary for a conical filter.

Hmmm, so it's looking like a popcharger would be happiest with a varis duct and vented hood....

Well, that may be true, but I know for a fact that when the radiator fans are blowing, the intake temperature shoots WAYYYYYY up with the popcharger.

If you can keep those fans off, then those items would help.

I wouldn't expect a huge noticable difference though, unless you constantly run at the drag strip.

What????

I've never seen this (never seen one in-person). Can the hole be "plugged?" WTF would Stillen put a hole in their heat shield? They all have this?

No, in fact I've never gotten my hands on an 06 intake yet hehe but when I do, I will swap it out and maybe try something.

I am thinking a simple fiberglass kit would do the trick.
