building exhaust
hey guys im looking at building my new exhaust for my 08 base. i am thinking about staying single with the nismo/weldina, but i kinda like the hks. the piping will be hydraulic bent, not mandrel. i think if i go with 3" pipe, i can offset the bends in the tube. ill probly come off the stock y pipe, and build back, maybe splitting under the rear end if i go with the hks. im just looking for some thoughts on what you guys think about it? what do you think is the best way to go?
btw: dont say buy a kit lol, im not gonna spend $1200 when i can build one for $250.

are you crazy?? lol the cars is stock!
i havent dynoed it yet. its been hard for me to get out lately with work. i race a dragster a couple times a month, so at the next race ill probly run the z and use the quarter mile times as a figure for gains. probly not as accurate, but it would be easier for me to work it that way.
im gonna go ahead and start mapping stuff out and order the muffler, and then get it rolling. first off..... one in/dual out muffler? or a can straight out the back?

itll be out of stainless, just not polished.
right now im thinkin about a skunk2 muffler, only because its cheap. i havent heard one on a Z, but it sounds good on a couple of other cars.
im making the point of this build to have a good looking, well performing, good sounding exhaust for less than $300.00. when i get it started ill be sure to post alot of pics.
im gettin excited! i wasnt gonna start the build for a few weeks, but i might have to do it sooner. ill look into doing it tomorrow.

What gauge of stainless are you going with? This will play a big role in the way the exhaust sounds. I wouldn't go any bigger than .065 wall, maybe .500.
I have recently purchased a 2006 350z and that would be my first project as well, and like you I'd like to build it myself.

really?? i have never heard that before, and i did custom exhaust for 4 1/2 years. one of us is out of the loop lol...
i have found a couple of off brand mufflers really cheap. in my experience, sometimes the off brands can be better built mufflers, if you pick the right one. the main one im looking at is really cheap, so if i do it, it could be a good test... if it doesnt work than i could always change it.
i think ill buy the muffler tomorrow and do the install next week...

most if not all aftermarket single exhausts are 3". It should be fine.
goodluck with the results, i wish i had built my own as well. SS pipe is SS pipe. Just keep the bends to a minimum and design in a way that the bends are very slight and the hydraulic bender should be fine. As far as the muffler goes i would use the one of these, buy they totally kill your budget

I 100% agree. I'm new here and I'v been doing some reading on in the I/H/E section and it seems that a lot of people are hung up on brand names tha IMO are over waaaay overpriced.
This is a prefect example with the exhaust systems, I work with stainless at work so I know that stainless is stainless. There is not "crapy" piping, there is only different grades of stainless: http://www.azom.com/details.asp?ArticleID=470
I have been a car guy for a while now and have a supercharged Ford probe GT. It's only a 2.5 running @ 7psi and it'll do the 1/4 mile in low 13's all day. I have a full ebay exhaust (including SS heders) and it's been runing fine for two years now, and looks like the day I bought it.

I built/fabricated/welded everything on the car, including the transfer shaft and all the brackets. http://s137.photobucket.com/albums/q...tboston004.jpg

very good point... so why spend all that money? im glad you called me stupid, because you showed everyone your incompetence to post on this forum. your obviously talking on a subject that you know nothing about.
3" is as big as you would ever want to go, unless your pushing 550hp. 3" may even be too big for my application, but we will see.
so i got the muffler delivered last night.. its not as bad as i thought for how cheap it was. hopefully itll do the same as an expensive one. all of the internals look to be about the same, without cracking it open of course.
build is set for monday!

its done!! sounds really good, and the car definately breathes better. i ended up staying with the 2 1/4", as my old boss felt that was the best way to go since im completely stock. it was a good decision. i know alot of ppl are going to flame me for "not doing 3", but thats only because they dont understand exhaust, even though they think they do. i ended up going with a different muffler than i originally bought. dont know what brand it is because it was on the shelf out of the box.
i started from where the front of the resonator would be, and worked back. it turned out very clean, and more importantly, it cost me less than $50.00. i did all the work myself though. someone else could probly do something similar for about $175. i took a video, but i dont know how to upload it just yet. some insight would be great. i snapped a few photos with my cell phone, so ill upload some more later. heres one to get you started.
