I wanted to do the same thing so I ended up hollowing out my stock cats. I was prepared to buy a set of HFC's in case something went wrong but they turned out great....however gutting them was a huge pain in the ***. In each pipe there is a ceramic section AND a metallic section, one on each side of the bend....let me tell you gutting out metallic catalytic converter material is no easy task. I spent an entire day and night cutting that crap out.

Sounds great though! And free (not really, cost a lot of time and soreness!)

I just picked up a use Z with Nismo intake / exhaust...

The difference between stock is very subtle when driving casually... but when you open up... it's AMAZING. So I suggest getting a Nismo catback and intake!

Do an axle-back or y-pipe back exhaust.

Honestly if you dont want rasp stay aawy from test pipes and hfc's. There is really no way of making the stock sound louder unless you get a really good exhaust. I would advise you to just save your money and go with a true dual exhaust from bassani, stillen, or fast intentions. all of these keep the stock sound and make it louder. They are pricey but well worth it. the bassani is the best exhaust for z's when it comes to sound and power. youtube the bassani exhaust. Another thing to keep in mind is that all of these exhaust are with x-pipes. h-pipe exhaust seem to drone alot.
