Cheapest way to improve exhaust sound?
I just picked up my 350. I love the sound of the exhaust, but it is too quiet. Is there a cheap way to make the stock exhaust louder? Yes, I have searched... it sounds like removing the resonator is a bad idea (raspy). Is there any other cheap way to modify the stock exhaust to be louder? Exhaust tips? Muffler change (without doing a full cat-back).
Eventually I'll get a full motor back exhaust... but want to keep it cheap right now.
Test pipes are supposed to sound great with the stock exhaust, but I don't want to deal with the constant CEL.
Ideas?

Get a CEL Eliminator or HFC's although some HFC's get pretty expensive. Might just have to save up or find a great deal on a used set up after you save up a little.
I would just save if I were you.

There are many ways to modify a stock exhaust. One member here has removed the entire rear muffler and had straight pipes welded on.
Another popular rice modification is to gut the cats.

^^These options are pretty much all I can give you. I just want to say it's refreshing to have someone post in the right section AND search first when they're less than a month into this forum... WAY more than I can say about myself a year ago.
PS... Intakes can also improve sound... JWT Popcharger is the best SOUNDING I've heard IMO...

High Flow Cats. No rasp with stock exhaust and really livens it up.
This is a very good question that needs answering.

I like the stock sound, so I wouldn't say I am looking to "improve" it. I want the exhaust to be louder (but not obnoxious) without ruining the stock sound.
Sounds like a set of high flow cats may be the best option. Connecticut has regular emissions testing, so test pipes would be a continuous pain (not sure if the OBD II test would detect no cats).
I had good luck with ebay exhaust on my maxima - got a very high quality looking full polished stainless exhaust for very cheap. Do the ebay exhausts for the 350 sound good? I will spend the extra cash on a name brand exhaust if it gets me anything, but if not then no reason to spend more than I need to.

I got my Topspeed on Ebay for 450 shipped, but you're talking a whole 'nother level of sound/loudness. It sounds amazing (and very Z-ish unlike straight pipes) with zero rasp, but it's loud.

I will spend the money on a big name exhaust eventually if there is good reason (the name is not a good reason). Right now I want to focus on paying off the car completely. Personally I don't think it is very responsible to spend $1200 an an exhaust when I still owe money on the car, but to each his own.
I would like to make some improvements to the car without spending a fortune. This should be doable. I am not going to make kludgy modifications that I will regret in a month. I want to make low cost improvements now, and save the big upgrades for later.
If this sounds rediculous to you, then please stay out of this thread and let those who are open to "budget thinking" discuss my question in a constructive way. The Z is a "budget" sports car, if you want to buy a car that puts you in a budget free community I suggest you step up to a Porsche or Ferrari, where the car costs enough to exclude those of us with a budget.
i'm running helix test pipes on a stock exhaust. very cheap. for me there is a little rasp around 3000 to 4000 rpm. check youtube for some videos. you can also purchase or make some non-foulers to take care of the cel problem.

There is a difference between being cheap and pertaining to a budget.
^^the OP did mention the word "cheap" in his post but i dont really think he meant cheap as in.....poking holes in the muffler or turbonator
he just meant a relatively low price. Im assuming $300 is fair game so i dont think he literally meant "cheap" in the ebay exhaust sense
