Exclamation Gotta Replace the Clutch and the Flywheel... but how expensive is that?

Well, I need help.

Somehow, for some reason, I burnt out the Clutch on my (relatively) new 2003 350Z. It has 19,000 miles on it (had 13,000 when I bought it) and I'm not even going to concern myself with wondering how the clutch became so worn.

Anyway, I took it to the dealership because I mistakenly thought it was covered under the warranty (Which it isn't). The grand total for a replacement flywheel and clutch was $2200, which I immediately thought was highway robbery. My friend confirmed this when he told me exactly how much a new clutch and a flywheel cost. "The price for labor was outrageous" says he.

Anyway, he told me I should call around to my local import specialists and tell them that I need them to put in a new clutch and a flywheel, which I have (a lie) and I should be able to get an estimate with a greatly decreased cost in labor. This is because, he said, they won't charge as much because they know you aren't as desperate.

Also, he added I should shop around for a stage 2 or 3 clutch or flywheel because they can be cheaper than stock parts (I assume because prices have to be competetive).

Since I live in Columbia, MD, I was hoping somehow out there might be able to give me advice, maybe even name a shop I could check out (or call) that is reliable and has good prices. Also, some advice on what steps I should take to avoid this monstrous bill are appreciated.

-Derek

P.S. I'm a first time poster and an owner of a 350 for only about 2 months. I didn't expect to so hastily be leaping on the forum bandwagon asking for maintenance help, but... anything I can get is extremely appreciated. Thank you very much.

while you're replacing you might as well go with an upgraded unit like the JWT, Nismo, Unorthodox, etc....

parts will run you about $800-$1400 and labor should be no more that $200-$300 (that's the labor price I paid at my dealership last year when they put my tilton in, and that included machining fees for my custom TO bearing adapter, which is not necessary with any other clutch) -- you can probably do it for a grand total of under a grand.

$200-$300 for labor is a great price! I've been quoted $450-$480 for a clutch replacement up here in MD/NoVA. If you upgrade the clutch, you might as well upgrade the flywheel. The ones Machupo mentioned above are all very streetable, and don't worry about the noise, it's so overrated and you'll forget about it in no time.

JWT flywheel with NISMO clutch. There are many variations, but the JWT flywheel or JUN flywheel picks up lots of publicity. my clutch has almost 12k, but I have been banging the heck out of it. Good throw, but it shudders some, which is normal wear if you ask me. question is not sure when I need to upgrade. rich, san jose, ca

Like Premium gas in CT at $4.65 gallon, the labor on a clutch job is higher at $1k.
