Tire FEATHERING: FYI
I'm not expecting to get anything like new tires. I'd just like to have whatever I can done so that my next set of tires doesn't have this problem.
Without the feathering, my current set would probably last another few thousand miles.

I then told him the only way I would take B-Stones again was if they were free. Then I went home and ordered Some new Yokohama AVS's all around for about the same price as 2 new Bridgestones. AAAAawful customer service Nissan and Bridgestone, I should have learned my lesson after the way I was treated with my 01 Maxima. I kinda wish I would have bought an S2000 right about now.

Sorry to hear your local Dealer doesn't know how to use the resources NNA has available. I like St Louis and the people a lot..
There is no excuse for the Dealership not to have internet access, and look for TSB's on a regular basis. It is a profit center for them.
Call 1-800-Nissan-1 and tell the company the dealership is not up with the program.. NNA will most likely tell the dealer they are under a lot of pressure with the Z.. And to get up to Infiniti level training.
Other Subject:
Could you post the AVS information... who, what , price etc.. as I have a great set on one of my old 1981 280zx Twin Turbo's and after they are warm... bump bump bump they are great on the road...
Cheers Amy

Please keep us up to date on the AVS / your Hunter Alignment and how the new tires hold up.
My tires were replaced in 11/03 and my "Final" repair was on 1/5/04. Well, the wheel hop is back at low speeds, so I'm going in for my 15K service and I'm just going to ask them to "confirm" the front tire hop - but DO NOT FIX IT.
Then I'll drop that settlement offer letter in the mail on Monday.....
I knew this was going to happen. The NNA rep/Tech was like "Trust Me..." back in Jan.
Yeah right.

My friend with a 7/03 build Performance model took his car to the dealership last week to deal with SEVERE tire cupping along the inside treads. 11,500 miles when serviced, noise was first noticed at 8000 miles.
Here are his alignment figures:
Front Left
Before After Range
Camber -0.5 -0.6 -1.3 to 0.2
Caster 8.4 8.4 7.4 to 8.9
Toe 0.07 0.06 0 to 0.08
SAI 4.8 4.9 4.3 to 5.8
Turning < 4.3 4.3 3.0 to 6.0
Front Right
Before After Range
Camber -1.0 -0.9 -1.3 to 0.2
Caster 8.6 8.6 7.4 to 8.9
Toe 0.04 0.05 0 to 0.08
SAI 5.1 5.1 4.3 to 5.8
Turning < 4.2 4.2 3.0 to 6.0
Before After Range
Total Toe 0.11 0.11 0.0 to 0.16
As you can see from the "before" and "after" figures, I wouldn't consider this an adjustment in the alignment AT ALL! They only did a swap, and it's still noisy as hell. He's fighting for new tires as you read this.

Hello all.... after 19 months and 25Kmiles of ownership of my Silverstone Touring 6spd..... I am finally giving up....
I hv had
1 repair on the Bose issues....
4 repairs on check engine light.....
3 adjustments of Alignments on Feathering issues....
1 set of tire swap....@ 17,000miles.....
And the lastest.....really **** me off...... After changing 2 new front tires @ 17,000 miles.... the Feathering is back and the road noise is starting again at 25K....
Brought my car in..... the svcs manager...agreed that my tire is feathering again...he kept on saying that ...it's unsual to see this problem come back after the tire swap and alignment adjustments....However....he promised they will do something to it.... he said they will probably have to give me two new tires and re-align the car again....
After 4 days in the dealership..... he called me back and said the alignment was done...and I can pick up the car........
When I pick it up....they did not change the tires.....but the worst is.....he asked me...if I had a collison on the car......he kept on saying that my the camber is way out of specs..... and it's definitely cause by a collision.....therefore...they cannot change the tire anymore..... They even put a statement on the Work Order...that SUSPECT COLLISION....for tire feathering....
I am the only person that drive this car.....and I know all too well....if I were in any sort of collision....
NISSAN not willing to take care of the problem...is one thing....but to blame me of collision..... for causing the camber to be way of specs.......REALLY pisses me off......
I just traded in my car at a loss....this morning.... I am sick and tired of arguing anymore....
Folks....sorry for giving up..... you guys have been great.....

I need to say hi to Boomer:
Not a fix but I have info. from experience (and lots of it). 12 miles to 42K. 5 alignments and 2 new sets of front tires and 2 swaps of front tires. RE040's allow the Z to dance on her toes. I now have Potenza S-03 Pole Position. She still dances but on the front ball of her feet (at least she's not flat footed). The S03's are very good but not great. (I was surprised I could tell the diffrence)14K miles on these tires and no tire feathering (knock on wood). The RE040's may be a large contributing factor to the tire feathering issue.

Well, I want to thank you guys for all the info about the tire problem. I bought my Pike Peak TRACK used with 20,000 miles on it. on my wayn home I heard the loudest NOISE coming from the front of the car. I heard it during the test drive and assumed it was warped rotors and requested the dealer to turn them. So, as soon as i got home i decided to do a search on the 350z, that's when i heard the term feathered tires for the first time. So, the next day I took the car to another Nissan dealer and behold they told me I had a tire feathering problem and suggested that I took it back where I bought it since I just got it the day before. I went back to the dealer that sold me the car and showed them the paper work from the other dealer that stated tires are feathered. My tires came in yesterday and they put them on today and gave me an alignment. The service guy showed me how far off the alignment was. Now the car rides much better. Thanks to my new 350Z family.
Z_Dragon_Lady,
Did you really mean "no feathering" or "very little feathering"? I just wanted that clarified. Also, important point here, did you get an alignment when you put on the new S03's? If you did not, then I believe alignment can be eliminated as a parameter, and certainly point to the tire as the main culprit. Suspension design still can't be eliminated as a culprit though, but I do take your news as good news.
Skywalk,
please post the name of the dealership and the name of the service manager you dealt with. The members here need to know who to avoid and to NEVER do business with. Sorry to hear you're leaving the Z community.

"No Feathering"
I did not align the new S03's. However 3-4 weeks prior to putting on the S03's I had the two front RE040's swapped due to feathering and an alignment was done on all 4 tires at that time (on Nissan's dime). After all this the NEW manager of the dealership called me and wanted to check the alignment on the car on his dime(the S03's had about 2K miles). The alignment was good and no adjustments were made.
I will say though that each time a new alignment was done after new tires put on, I managed to get 2K more miles out of the tires before feathering occured. Tire feathering may occur yet. I have 14K miles on these tires.
I do not believe this is a fix, just a work around. I'm sure I can get better wear out of these tire's and for me that is a huge issue. When I calculated cost of ownership of the 350Z, I had not included a new set of tires every 7-10K miles. I'm sure these tires will last considerably longer.

Skywalk: Dude that's a raw deal they gave you...You have the stength of Job (that dude in the Bible that god apparently let the devil F with...I love that story)...I think I would have flipped out on the dealer...Big Time...I can hear the sirens already...
Seems to be alot less traffic on this thread lately...is the feathering becoming less of a problem?

Not much to say, have been running winter tires and they dont count as far as NNA is concerned. They are quiter than the new Bridgestones given to me by NNA. The winter tires have gotten a little noisey after 2000 miles but far quiter than the Bridgestones.
Did any else notice the posting on another forum regarding a dealer in Windsor saying there will be new tires in June or July for the feathering issue?
I won't hold my breth.

Does anyone one subscribed to this thread know of anyone else that miraculously does not have this issue with the OEM tires and suspension? I mean, I'd like to hear someone say that they got 20k miles out of the RE040 on stock suspension with normal wear, and no roaring. I look at my tires, and even if they are starting to roar (moderately) at 9000 mi, it looks like they should last another 10k miles, easily. After 2000+ posts, I don't recall any that stated NO ROARING issue. I just assumed that the folks that haven't claimed any tire roaring problems are just oblivious, deaf or both.
Like many of the members, I will use my hard earned $ to pay for new suspension bits and wheels to rid of the noise. But, this WILL be my last Nissan, and I'll be making aggressive efforts to deter future purchases by friends, family, and acquaintances. I know I have already delayed a few buyers by warning them to wait till Nissan fixes this problem. I'm not embarrassed to tell people that this beautiful Z sounds like it's got mud bogging tires.
Now,... that brings up another issue with me. My wife will be looking for another car in the near future. Well, the salesman at nissan, and I are close friends. And he asked me while we were both going to the bank together in my roaring Z, not to forget about the murano. I told him that I liked the vehicle, but my question is, if there was anything of issue with the murano, would I find out about it like I found out about the tire issue on my Z, after the sale? (I thought we were good friends). I have been watching this thread for over a year now and you guys are the best americans on the earth. Keep up the great attitudes and the good works.

I know that pretty much everyone has the FRONT FEATHERING. Does anyone recently have any problems with the back feathering? I had my front tires replaced at 8,200 miles. I stated hearing the growling again 800 miles later. My tech claims that the back tires are making the noise. Now I have well ovber 10K miles with my rear feathering. Has anyone had thei back tires replaced on NNA's dime?
Can someone point me to the lastest TSB with specs? They got my tires in so I'm going to take my car in tomorrow. The service guy said that the alignment was the same as when I had the tires swapped in early November. I remember at least one TSB coming out in December and maybe even something more current.
Thanks
Thanks
