Tire FEATHERING: FYI

I've also tried contacting the attorney general, with no useful information as a result.

The Krohn and Moss Attorney's were far from inferior. I base that on the fact that they specialize in LL type of claims and they won my claim. You have prescedence in your favor, go for it. In fact, I would never go to an attorney that dissparages another attorney. That shows weakness!!

I am working with Krohn and Moss here in Ohio. So far they seem to be pretty good. I get regular detailed updates mailed to me when necessary. Other than that I pretty much am just waiting on what steps are next. It as been about 4 months or so since I filed my case. Any one have any ideas how much longer it should take? My lawyer said we are in the 'discovery' phase now. This is when both sides trade what case information they have with each other.

Is this still a common problem or is it fixed. The reason I ask is I had my front tires replace and my alignment corrected on my 03 by Nissan at 5K miles with the old style tires. Now after 7K miles on the new tires with no maintance there is no feathering. I figure on this type of vehicle with this type of tire and the fact they can't be rotated that 15K miles would be good for the fronts. Base on what I am seeing that is what I will get. So is that what others are also seeing???
I started seeing it around 7000 mi. Had the TSB and tire swap done. Now I have 15,000 mi and I still have a small amount of feathering on the inside and outside tread. But it is not bad and I have another ~10k miles left in these tires.
They are noisy but I am putting up with it because it’s not that bad. I'm just going with a new tire next time. I don’t have an extreme tire wear issue (I suspect most cases are similar).
BUT, when I had the TSB alignment done I had to take it back because the wrong specs were used. It was done right the second time. If I hadn’t taken it back and just assumed it was correct I would have likely experienced very bad tire wear.
Bottom line is, DEMAND THE ALGINMENT DATA SHEET. DON’T JUST TAKE THE SHOP’S WORD THAT IT IS RIGHT. UNDERSTAND WHAT IS GOING ON WITH YOUR CAR.
Unfortunately this thread has become terribly protracted. The only real discussion is amongst a few select people who are talking about litigation and not tire feathering.

Some of us have reached the point where it is obvious that the car cannot be fixed, and have exhausted all options aside from litigation. So, the discussion naturally will move towards the details, risks, etc of pursuing this to that extent.
Dear Gary K.,
I am experiencing abnormal tire wear on my 03' 350z Enthu Model. It seems from what I could read from this forum that you filed a law suit against Nissan about the tire issue. So are you still in the process? Obviously if you win your suit the rest of us will also be implemented as well. So therefore if you need any assistance I will fullfill my duties.
Another question for you is: Should I or any other 350z owner with abnormal tire acquire an attorney as you are?

Approximately 7-9 months, so have patience. Sometimes they use a federal LL as the basis for their suit. In either case Nissan will do everything they can to extend the time and at the end they will offer some rediculous settlement options. Listen to your lawyer. There is no known fix for this problem

I had my car aligned at a independent Tire/Brake shop.
I am pretty sure my feathering is under control. I need to drive some more miles. I am driving to Las Vegas for Christmas. I will probably put about 1k miles with all the running around.
I have not given up. To get my Z keys, you would have to pry them from my dead fingers!

Over six months have past since the latest TSB has been in effect. The number of people complaining about this problem seems to have diminished. I think this suggests that in many cases (but not all) the TSB is resolving the problem.
It will be interesting how many " I have an 05 350Z and my tires are feathering" incidents we hear over the next few months.
For those of you who are pursing legal action, please do not misinterpret my cautious optimism about the effectiveness of the TSB as a discredit to your problem. It’s no secret that this is a common problem that varies in severity (and effectiveness of the TSB).
Personally, if I ever have to pursue legal action myself I will definitely review your input to this thread as advice for my own actions.

I had the April 12, 2004 TSB performed and with new front tires in April, 2004 by RSM Nissan.
The feathering returned after 5k miles. I finally came to the conclusion that Nissan has no clue how to fix this problem or what the alignment settings are suppose to be.
A friend of mine with a Track model, told me that he had his alignment performed at an Independent Tire & Brake shop that specializes in sports cars. He also replaced his tires with Toyo T1s (more aggressive tread pattern on the inside and outside edges).
He has over 6k miles and his feathering has not returned.
I did the same but have Good Year Eagle F1s. The technician at American Tire & Brake in MV laughed at Nissan's settings in the latest 4/2004 TSB. He said they were way off.
My 2 cents...

Purchased 5/03
Rotated and aligned 10/03
New tires and aligned 12/03
New tires and aligned 6/04
Feathering at .060 threshold 12/04 waiting for NNA to respond to dealer.
Total mileage aprox 34,000
With the experience I have had, I believe the issue is not an issue that will be resolved for all the effected vehicles with the correction of toe angle.

I think the redesigned tires they are using are masking the problem, not fixing it. But hopefully you are correct for all of those unknowing people out there.

Please don’t misunderstand me; I am not sticking up for Nissan. However, at this point I do not except that my car has a fundamental design problem. Who knows, perhaps in the future I will be persuaded otherwise. Eventually history will be the telltale.

Next spring I'm getting an aligment at a local (or not) performance shop by a mechanic that's on the ball.

Sorry I wasn't able to reply sooner, been very busy. Part of my argument was that this is a design flaw, which was met with lies from the Nissan rep, and the arbitrator didn't seem to comprehend the technical aspects that would prove this. In a nutshell, the problem we are having is usuallly caused by exessive caster, and since this is not adjustable there is no way to fix the problem. I presented supporting documentation to validate all of my claims, but to no avail. In my case it was a lost cause, and a waste of about two days of my time to deal with this through the BBB.
My experience with the BBB has been horrible every time, so my expectations were low when I submitted to their program. They seem to not really care about supporting consumers, at least in my dealings with them. Their attitude is , and this is actually a quote: "Its a free service, so you can't expect much". And they strive to live up to that one.
There are obviously some people that have been successful using the BBB for the LL resolution. Those people apparently got lucky and had a decent arbitrator and/or rep from Nissan. I envy them.

However, I now have about 17K miles on the car and the road growl is really excessive. When I received the notice from Nissan that they would replace the tires, I finallly broke down and took my car into the dealer. That was in early October...at that time, he said they would cover replacement of the tires and said he would let me know when they arrive. It have been over 6 weeks and they are still on back order.
Is anyone else experiencing this kind of delay?
Based upon recent information noted above, do you think Nissan is backing off of the tire replacement and moving to another option?

I am having the a delay problem with my dealer in Kennesaw, Ga. They claim tires are on back order, but it's been nearly seven weeks since I first went to them about the tire problem.
Is this normal or am I getting the run around from the dealer?
