Default What is gear whine?

I am wondering if my gears are whining. When I am going about 20 mph in second gear and I want to downshift to first, there is alot of resistance along with a high pitched noise coming directly from the shifter. The noise goes away once the gear is engaged. This will happen even if the clutch pedal is fully depressed. If this whine? and is it normal?

I think the noise you are hearing are your synchros working overtime. On the street there really isn't any reason you should go into 1st except from a dead stop. Your clutch will like you for it, and the car has plenty of torque to accelerate in 2nd.

ding ding ding, whoever tought you manual forgot to tell you NEVER downshift to 1st. you can get away with it under 5mph, but at 20mph ****, I ussually go to 3rd at that point, 1st gear redline is 32mph. if you absolutly MUST shift to first(train coming at you, ricer threatening your manhood, ect) then you could do it, but please try to rev match, or even double clutch.

otherwise, no 1st gear except from a stop, and if your rolling to a light, coming to a stop, dont shift to first to pull away till your actually AT the light waiting. screw up your synchros and you wont be a happy camper.

good advice. I have always been trying to shift into first with the clutch fully depressed when coming to a stop in anticipation of rolling out again. I dont think my clutch will long survive my newbie manual shifting habits.

sadly what your doing is in no way harming the clutch, but its harming the synchros, something I think youd rather never replace. dont worry bout it tho, not much damage done.

heres a rule of thumb, if your actions require excessive force, or cause an abrubt jolt in the car, its bad. anything that happens easily and smoothly is good.

like she said, "Match rpm's, and it 'll slip right in."

yes heel toe
no double clutch
no whine
no damage

it's a gear and you can use it.

Rotax max's are getting more popular cause they're cheap...$2000 gets you everything including electric start... Not that many people run them yet in my area. I just got into karting about 2 years ago but it is a blast!!! Now I hope to autocross my 350 once in a while but Kart parts are cheaper to replace..
