Line is not pinched. Is there a sensor that would cause the PS to turn off?

There is a plug that goes to the pump, you could check that.

Sorry to say but your ps pump is toast. I have done it too. So has a few others here. Just take it back to the dealer and tell them something is wrong. Just act dumb if they ask if you were driving hard or something. Mine was replaced free. What happens is when you have your wheel turned during donuts at high engine rpm, the shaft get sheered. I hope you still have warranty as its about a $450 part if I remember correctly.

Oh yeah if there are pieces of ps pump floating around you prolly dont want to drive it too much. They would not let me take mine home when they said they had to order the part.

Is this becuase of holding the steering wheel at full lock for too long or is doing donuts in general that hard on the steering pump? This one is new to me. Thanks for the warning I guess...

You shouldn't be against the bump stop for more than 5 seconds and that is at low speeds, like turning around and parking. I have done it before so I know what it feels like to drive a car without it. It is worse than a car that was designed not to have power steering.

so I just got this same problem. My car is an '03 bought in may '03, i have 47,000 miles on it. they told me that there is "metal contamination" in the system and need to replace the rack and the pump and the bill would be $2900 or so. what should I do? obviously this isnt under warranty but this seems faulty. any suggestions?

Well mine happened while i was outa town. I drove home 150 miles and prolly another 50 or so miles before i got it to the dealer. They only replaced my pump. That was 50,000 or so miles ago, no problems since. See if they will just replace pump and flush the ps fluid as best they can. I guess that is your best option.

I think im going to tow it home with my truck and a friends trailer, put it in my garage and do the work myself. flush it out the best I can, replace the pump and see how that works out.
