Default Revlimiter

I know the revlimiter kicks in at 6600, and I've hit it before while accelerating. However, I had a misshift over the weekend while downshifting from 6th to 4th, and I over-revved the motor, and it went well past redline (7300 or so). While the motor seems fine, what I am concerned with is that the revlimiter doesn't seem to work unless you're in gear. Can anyone else confirm this?

Are you saying that you missed 4th gear and went into 2nd, or that you didn't get 4th engaged properly and wound the engine up in neutral?

What I think he is saying is that he took the car out of 6th, blipped the throttle to rev match 4th, missed the shift to 4th, and his blip went up to 7300 RPM.

I've "over reved" when doing a 0-60 run and power shifting from second to third. I also noticed the rev limiter did kick in, but not fast enough to prevent the redlining the engine. I think that there is a delay between hitting the revlimiter and the fuel cut off that ensues, 1/4 second or so. And that in a controlled over-rev, it has time to catch it, but in a rapid flooring the revlimiter doesn't have time to adjust it before hitting redline.

It did kick in, but the lag caused an over rev.

Perhaps you're right, and there's a delay (which would make sense if it simply cuts your fuel). And yes, I blipped the throttle and wasn't able to get the car into 4th (oops).

I've never see a car have a "delay". Most can sit there and bounce directly off the rev limiter. It should take no time at all for the ECU to decide not to fire a fuel injector or spark plug.

I'd also like to just point out that "redline" isn't necissarly the same thing as "rev limiter".

I don't think you have done any harm from revving the engine in neutral. The hard rev limiter is somewhat above the 6600 redline. Plus, the 7300 you saw on the tach may have been some overshoot of the tachometer needle. It has some mass and inertia and if it is moving up fast it may go above where the engine rpm's actually get limited.

I assume the rev limiter controls throttle over-revving not gear over-revving. So if you manage to shift into too low of a gear by mistake, the rev limiter will not stop the engine from over-revving. Is this correct?

yes, if you for example were 3rd, doing 88mph, and shift to 4th, but miss and hit 2nd, your RPMs would rocket to around 10000. you would be gaurenteed to bend rods, and your car would basicly be junk. you then pray that nissan doesnt have a policy of checking the ECU for record of overrevving(probably dont) and they proceed to open it up and fix it.

this seemed to be a huge problem for RSX when it came out, not sure why. but they were constantly over revving with misshifts. be careful, this is a serious problem, not something a revlimiter can fix. there is no solution to this exept being careful.

The thing with the RSX, it was all in the fact that the distance between shifts is much shorter than in the last generation model. So when all this people bought the car, they all thought it was the same feel, when it really is somewhat different, and the all started mis-shifting...
