ok i just got a call today and i came on to post about it, but the site was down and it made me sad

i got a call today and was told that the drive belt broke and cut the trans coolant line and it all drained out and there might even be damage to the trans because of it. they threw out a 750 dollar charge... now im no genius with cars, but if my drive belt snaps wont my power steering and radio and junk NOT work? also... they wont cover this under warranty because its a "maintenence" problem that i was supposed to maintain, however in the user manual it never says WHEN to replace the stupid belt. and it doesnt say that the belt "isnt" covered in the warranty under drivetrain warranty.. what the hell shud i dooooooo!!

If it was your belt that snapped, that would kinda stuck. I also think that it would fall under maintenence. There isnt really a mileage persay, of when to replace your belts. Your supposed to look at them every so often, for cracks or splits and other signs of wear.

Replacing your belts are pretty cheap though, and you should just try putting them back on by yourself. The tranny coolant line, cant be that hard to replace either. Hopefully it didnt damage your tranny.

For $750, what did they tell you they were going to replace/repair?

In my service and maintenance guide, it says to replace the engine drive belts every 30k miles.

nMugen,

Which dealer did you go to ? I'm in Rochester Hills...

As far as the belt breaking, there are 2 drive belts on the car. One is the A/C belt and the other is the P Steering/Alternator/Oil Pump belt. I think the water pump is driven with the timing chain - not sure. Anyway, it probably was the A/C belt that broke - I'm not sure you would get a dash warning light. If the other belt broke, you would get a yellow light in the dash for the charging system. The battery would still get your engine (spark) running and radio, etc until you drained it completely. If you ran for a while with no oil in the trans, you might have damage that will cost a lot more than the $750. The 750 is just a start...

Hope it turns out ok for you. You should ask to see the broken belt and see if it makes sense that the coolant line could have been broken by the belt.

In the FSM factory service manual, it says:

"After 60,000 miles or 48 months, inspect every 15,000 miles or 12 months. Replace the drive belts if found damaged."

That means that the first time that you should have inspected the belt is at 60,000 miles or 48 months. The 48 months is key here. When was the car first put on the road? If it's Feb 2003 or after, you should try to fight it with Nissan. The dealer may not help but you would have to call Nissan and explain your situation and show them their own maintenance interval recommendation. It's a long shot but worth a try.

Dude you need to treat the dealer like women. like SH*t. My dealer replace my engine b/c it was consuming oil. Look at my mods. I made it happen. Grow some *****. Be rotten.

When was the car first put on the road ? The dealer can tell you that, it's in their records. It's the basis for telling you when your warranty expires. It will also tell you if you were supposed to inspect the belts (per their maintenance schedule) before the failure or not.
