Default Belt issue - Cold weather?

I am having a problem with the belts squealing on my UR pulley...at least I think that is what is causing the problem. I am not sure if it is being caused by the belts being too loose or whatever, but in my opinion the symptoms of the problem are strange. I will list them, and would appreciate any help I could get in fixing this problem.

- Belt(s) squeal like hell on start-up on cold mornings...it is worse if the A/C is turned on. Sometimes if I turn the A/C off, it goes away immediately, other times I have to literally drive my car until I get the revs past about 4k for it to quit.

- Car is warmed up sufficiently, been running approx 10 mins (or longer)...flip on the heat and the belts start squealing again...LOUDLY. This is only when the car is coming to stop. If I am driving on the highway it never squeals.

- If it is especially cold, like > 32 degrees, the belts squeal no matter what whenever I stop my car. This could be for a traffic light, stop sign, whatever...

It has gotten absolutely terrible over the past few weeks with the worsening weather. It makes me embarassed to drive my car, knowing that when I start it up it is going to squeal like a banshee. I am considering paying to have the UR uninstalled, but I dont know for sure if that is what's causing the problem. I have had none of these things happening in warm weather. Is anyone else having this problem ?

Belts squeal in cold weather, all u can do is make sure they are tight and use a quality belt. They especially squeal on start up because u have just drained the battery by a percentage starting the car and the alt. is working to bring voltage back up, to replace what u lost in started useage . Once thats achieved, the Alt. relaxes and spins freely, and needless to say , the A/C comp is putting a tremendous load on the belts.

Your embarassed ? Cant help u with that. I dont get embarassed over things I have no control over.

a. Clean the belts with a product like Belt Ease.
b. Adjust the tension.
c. Get new belts. Members often us ribbed belts to eliminate slipping.

The Goodyear Gatorback belt cures the belt squeal when cold/damp/wet. Other than that you can try some belt dressing, you'll have to apply it weekly or more!

i got UR underdrive pulley and gates belts and they never squealed again once i got the tension corrected three weeks after initial installation. That was almost three years ago. Belt squeals because of loose tension.

sometimes you can't tell how snug the belts are just by touching. You need a gauge to measure the actual tension.
once the Gunk dressing wears out...the squealing might return.

i hate the belt squeel issues on our cars. i feel the being embarrassed. i'm suppose to be driving this nice car with a s\c, and i feel like i'm driving a POS 87 honda. it frustrates me so much it makes me wanna sell the car. i know the tech. aspects of why it does it, but still... it's not cool.

If you're that frustrated, just learn to adjust the belts yourself. It's not that difficult, but you will need to look it up the the service manual. Two 12 mm bolts and a little knowledge go a long way.

The service manual gives the tension specs for the belts. Mine started squealing as the weather got colder, I had my tech adjust the tension and the problem is gone.

Plus a good GoodYear "GatorBack" Main drive belt tightened like a guitar string. Bearing stress is not much of a factor on the Z set up.

I tighten my AC belt just so I dont get squeal under a load----Brg stress is a little bit of a factor there, so just tighten it to the minimum plus a little

i do don't worry but even so the cold weather and the pulleys just dont like each other. just annoying as hell to me. belt squeel is just a really big nuisance to me. more then road noise or vibrations or anything else. cause no matter what i still hear that stillen s\c belt a tiny bit when at idle sometimes. oh well... i'll live.

Rule of thumb: ANY machine or component that is thinking about breaking or generally just acting up will do so when the temp drops below freezing and that factor will multiply itself as the temp continues to drop.

Physics and molecules and all that business
