Default whirring noise? halp me plz kthx

today i was driving down the highway at around 80 in 6th gear and i noticed a whirring noise coming from what sounded like the rear of the car, but i can't ever really tell where its coming from. either way, i think i've heard about an issue like this from other Z members. is it something i should be worried about?

also, i noticed a kinda faint thumping noise or something that i think was coming from the front right. maybe an alignment would help?

both were kinda hard to hear over the hks

alot of times i hear things that aren't really a problem, but i don't want my purty new car breakin' down on me.

any help?

At 80mph, I'm usually hearing the trans/diff whining. It's especially noticible out on a smooth highway.

Thumping noise - it's hard to tell. Low speed or high? Regular or irregular? Rough roads or all?

why just at 80?

and the thumping is really only noticeable at high speeds and its a regular noise, and on smooth roads. it could be that its the only time i'm hearing it, and its going on all the time. not sure.

It has to do with the resonant or natural frequency of the gears involved. I've noticed it in every Z I owned.

Alignment shouldn't have anything to do with a thumping sound. It could be a flat spot on a tire but that would cause vibration too. That one's hard to diagnose without hearing it in person.

oh,so the whirring is gear whine? I've got the same sound at high speeds and I always just attributed it to brake drag (Pads just slightly slightly rubbing against the rotors). Would gear whine also not be present in a continuous fashion? My car sometimes has the whine, but it pulses like every half second or so. Thanks for any info.

Does it go away if you go 83+ or so? And does it start right around 80? If so, then yea, its the gears. Mine does the same thing. I notice it more when its cold out.
