Currently getting my tranny replaced ( '03 Track Trim w/ 12,500 mil) at Douglas Nissan in Calif. I just bought the car used and recently found the problem. I thought I was at fault for the grinding, but I feel better finding out its a manuf. defect. THANK GOD ITS FREE!! They're even touching up my paint (damn rock chips!!)

Anyone have any idea what % of 2003 transmissions are defective? Or maybe they are all defective and it just takes some longer then others to start having shifting problems. I'm glad they are covered by a 5 year 60K mile warranty.

The long-term test Z that Road and Track reviewed had it's transmission replaced at around 25K under warranty but they made them pay approx. $1100 for a new clutch. I think the 2003 350Z's should all have their transmissions replaced and I bet most will before their 5 year 60K mile warranty period expires.

I am having the 3rd gear grind issue, so I made an appointment for tomorrow (5/26) at a dealership to have them take a look at it. They weren't aware of the problem, so we'll see what happens.
I am still not sure how I can replicate it for them. Anybody else have any troubles eith trying to prove it to them?

as i already posted on this thread i had mine replaced a month or 2 back.
just the other day i noticed a creaking sound from under the car as i let off the clutch and rolled backwards. then it happened again as i was pulling out of a gas station.
does any one know what this is and if it has anything to do with my tranny replacement?

I'd highly recommend that you have it checked-out.

I had my tranny replaced the other day (18,000 mi.) grinding into 3rd. They also replaced my clutch because they said that the splines in the new transmission did'nt match up with the old clutch splines. The new clutch take up is about 2 inches later than the old one too late in my opinion. Dealer says this is not adjustable. Want the feel of my old clutch back. Can anyone help?

It is moderately adjustable...where the pedal pushes the plunger in under the dash..you'll probably need a Factory Service manual to get it right though.

You are right these guys are idiots. See my reply in hows youre clutch feel. I don't trust these guys to even work on a bicycle, but the only other option I have is to drive an hour and half to Louisville to get service that could be just as bad

My appointment was today, so I dropped the car off at the dealer. I asked him if they've had to replace many trannys on the 2003 model and the answer was "Yes, quite a few, but none recently."
Hopefully, they will be able to solve my problem. I told him the problem is very sporadic and they more than likely would not see the problem if they test drove the car. I had no idea how to reproduce the issue for them.
We will see what they say when I go to pick it up.

received a call from the service manager and he said it's definitely an internal problem. They are going to have to keep it until at least tomorrow morning to give me a final answer on what will need to be done on it.
We will see.

So the guys at the service center (Regal Nissan - Roswell) need to "see" the problem or rather "hear" it. He said two guys have driven it and he was going to let the assistant service manager take it for a drive and pound on it. He said they were actually working on another 350z that can reproduce the problem all the time, but they need to see the problem on mine before changing the tranny. That sucks because I've only got about 5 months left on the warranty w/12k on it.
I told them to keep it for the rest of the day to try an reproduce the problem.
Anybody have any advice on replication of the problem to make it easy to show them?
