Wow, that is not cool at all. I think the reps behave like this so that they do not have to honor warranties but if you call their bluff, they will back off and honor the warranty.

I think I'm on my way to selling my Z if they don't buy it back. Nissan has screwed with me too many times now. My seat is now falling apart as well, when I turn corners, the seat is lifting off the mount about 4 inches and then when I turn the other way, it collapses. This car is the worst as far as repairs that I have ever experienced and now I'm dealing with incompetence at the dealership level as well as 1-800-Nissan-1. Its pretty bad when we know our cars better than the mechanics, salesmen and customer service combined!

I understand that the 2nd part number tranny felt like the original basically. I just have to reiterate the comments people have made so far about this latest tranny revision. S2K tranny immediately came to mind. Shift feel, shift pressure, shift smoothness, power delivery, everything feels perfect. It feels like a better than new car, I am ecstatic. I just picked it up an hour ago and it is 54 degrees out, and no problems when it was cold, no problems at all.

Wow.

Again, for the thread:

Replaced 10-14-03
South Point Nissan in Austin, TX
December 2002 build car
3rd part number tranny
I did some research and here is what I found out.

From what I found out, there is no 3rd tranny. The only thing is there is a new update Clevis Pin. This is 3rd Clevis pin out. There is no part number yet. It was just released. This 3rd Clevis Pin should get rid of all the grinds. Espcially in 2nd & 3rd gear. Once I find out more, I'll post it. I want to make sure it worksfirst.

Replaced my tranny with about 13k on it. No problems with new one so far...only have about 3k on it though...someone got a free ext. warranty,? Damn, I paid extra for mine.

Town North Nissan replaced it in Austin TX. Had the same grinding as everyone else between 2nd and 3rd gear. I also noticed people complaining about window grease, I have that same problem. The tech at Nissan said he knew nothing about other Z's with this tranny problem and I chuckled at him.

Default Nissan Stealerships!

TRANNY finally replaced after many months of bitching.
Heres the deal. The first dealeship voided my warranty without even diagnoising the problem. I called Nissan and trust me it took months for someone to call me back. I explained that the dealer voided my warranty. According to NNA, the dealer cannot void the warranty. Its the decision of NNA to do this. The dealer must diagnose the problem (take it apart), and they must conclude that the part was affected by the performance part before a CLAIM to NNA is made to void the warranty... The first dealer automatically ASSUMED my syncros were bad due to aftermarket parts. NNA asked me how they determinied I had a bad Syncro. I replied they test drove it and gussed. They told me to take it to another dealership for diagnostics. The 2nd dealer definetly knew there were issues with the tranny (Grinding) not related to my parts installed. They got authorization from nissan and installed a brand new trannsmission. In short some are stealerships others are dealerships.

South Point finally admitted knowing about it in a roundabout way when I picked mine up after the tranny replacement.

I clunk into 3rd sometimes, but never have problems shifting into any gear. Keeping an eye (ear) on it to see if it progresses. The new tranny has been great, it was doing that 3rd gear clunk the day I picked it up.

I just got my new tranny too, dealer gave me no problems.

let me just say, this is a different tranny, it is nothing like the old tranny with the notch, like one guy said, it reminded him of a honda tranny. thats true. It reminded me of my miata and 3rd gen rx7 tranny.

Its actually taking me time to adjust now, to this new tranny. the clutch connects up higher then before, due to the new clevis, and they also replaced the clutch master cyl.

Picked it up on a cold day, not grind, not notch, no little budge, its smooth. I feel like i have a new car again, at 17k miles.

I had the grind from the get go, but the synchros went at like 15k miles. they were shot, you could not get into 3rd gear over 4k rpm without a grind. I waited to watch all the guinea pigs get like 20 tranny replacements. I waited for the real fix to come out, and now I have a new car and im ecstatic!

haha, it appears that I am not in the clear as I had expected. I have had 2 transmissions installed in my Z. This now THIRD tranny (this one has the first updated clevis pin) is grinding FIFTH gear. WTF? How can I possibly be "abusing" 5th gear? So now I am goin in for my fourth tranny... jeez.

the only good news is that MANY other makes with 6 speeds (accord, rsx, viper, 330ci) are having to constantly replace the tranny. It seems to be a problem with six-speeds in general . hmmm

Does anybody know how many different versions of the 350Z 6spd transmission there are?

I have the first and second versions. The first one (July '02 Build date) was by FAR smoother, until the grinds of course.

Replaced at 4700 grinding into 6th if skipping 4th or 5th and 1 out of 5 fast shift into 2nd would be a major crunch.

New one works great, they had the shifter plate mis-aligned and 5th was hanging up on the reverse lockout. They adjusted the plate and it's fine now.

I have a 2004 Enth with about 3000 miles. I don't have any grinding (yet), but have distinct notchiness in 2nd and sometimes in 3rd. The notchiness happens about 50% of the time in 2nd, and it doesn't seem to get much better as the car warms up.

It doesn't bother me too much yet, but I'm keeping my ears peeled for the grinding sound. There is also a 'clunk' sound that often comes on when going into 2nd gear. Pressing and releasing the clutch in neutral is also accompanied by a seemingly non-threatening sound of moving parts (heavy moving parts), but I don't notice these kind of sounds in other cars.

On a side note, my '94 Sentra (w/ 150,000 miles) grinds when I put it in 1st or reverse. That grinding came on about 20,000 miles ago, and I keep on driving it like that because I don't want to put any money into a $2000 beater. I still use it to haul stuff that I can't haul in the Z (mountain bikes, skiis, furniture, lumber, etc...) or carry more than 1 passenger. The Sentra was one reason why I bought the Z... 150,000 miles, no tune ups, 33mpg, just the basic maintenance that I do myself like oil, oil filter, air filter, spark plugs. I was hoping the Z is as buttet proof.

you know i been reading and hearing about these transmission problems ever since i got my car . . . i got a 04 touring roadster. i felt the clicking and stiffness in 2nd and 3rd from the beginning . . . but now with 1100 miles, i'm pretty sure it's grinding now, but i took it to the dealer and they said that it felt fine! so now, i'm thinking i'm just being paranoid . . . are there any other 2004 z owners with this problem? am i going crazy?

Same situation as you but I am almost positive we are just being paranoid. I think it is bound to happen that the tranny will start grinding, but when it does I think we will get the perfectly fixed tranny that some of these guys are talking about.

Just got 2nd tranny replaced today. I think this is the 3rd generation tranny. I still feel a little knoch on the 2nd but I have not had any grinds yet. The real test is going to be tommorrow morning when the tranny is cold. I am keeping my fingers crossed.

I posted earlier about the notchiness going into 2nd and 3rd gear accompanied by occasional clunks. I recently noticed that 5th gear groans on light to moderate acceleration. Just recently, I tried quick shifting and when I push down on the clutch swiftly, there's a rattling noise by the time my foot is bottomed out. The rattling noise is more pronounced when I don't shift into gear (no clunk noise to hide it).

So, I brought the car in for its 3750 mile oil change, and asked the service writer to check into all that noise coming from the transmission, along with stuck gas cap, and a few clicking noises from the rear.

The service writer calls me 2 hours later to concur that it indeed does not sound normal, and that they are on the phone with NNA, trying to isolate the problem.

4 hours after that phone call, the service writer calls me up, and tells me I need my transmission replaced. A new tranny is on order... My build date is July 2003

Do you feel paranoid now?
