rattling/clunking in rear?
J. Dub, not sure why you think our cars don't have struts in the back. Every modern day car with a coil suspension setup and independent rear has struts. The only difference is that unlike the front, the strut and spring are mounted separately in the rear of the Zs.
So here's my suggestion to you: take the car to a shop, have them remove the strut completely (this doesn't require removing the spring, remember) and take a look at the gasket spacer that sits at the very top of the strut (it should be red colored). Make sure it isn't torn up. If it is, get a new one. You have an excessive amount of noise, far more than my car did, and that leads me to believe the top of your strut may also be touching the frame. Now, the most important bit of info is when you remount the strut, have them torque the bolt that goes through the fork tight. Take it out for a drive, and if the sound disappears that's your culprit.
What you should do next is lift the car back up, and try the 'hole fill' trick I mentioned earlier on. The bolt is too thin for the hole at the fork of the strut and loosens itself up.

Good advice, I'll check that too
DUB,
I actually saw your vid in that thread over the weekend...went to my car and was looking around...
I think you need to get a stethoscope man... I have one as a mechanic tool and have used stethoscopes to find noised like this.........you may be needing to ride in the back with the hatch open again, etc, but ya...
is it the latch?

I read your description and i think its a blown shock or something loose on it? I think this, because you say that it DOESN'T make the noise going up a driveway...thats compression....a shock is rebounding at that piont and not bouncing when hitting bumps down the street...get it?
have you ever replaced the suspension on the car? is the suspension oem shocks and springs??
internally in the shock......put a stetiscope on the rear strut - remove the plastic cover.
put it here where he is drilling....

Drive 10mph down the street with the hatch open and put the stethoscope at the drill point and then put it out on the fender outside the hatch, on the car body as well.

^ worth looking into, but what gets me is that it only happens when its colder outside....
Jdub, you dont have any oem suspension you can swap into your car? craigslist, marketplace, etc...have a buddy with a Z that will let you swap his shock into your car then drive around the block...

everyone that has this problem check your wheel bearings that is wat my 06 350 was doing. jack the back of your car up and see if you can move your back tire side to side
Hi, everybody. I've had an '07 coupe for about a year and a half.
A few weeks ago, I started getting a rattle or "clunk" noise coming from somewhere in the back only when I hit bumps. There was some play in the spare tire, so I padded it with some foam rubber. But it's still there.
Last winter, I didn't notice this.
Has anyone else had this, especially with an '07? I'm just hoping it's not one of those noises that the dealer will claim not to hear or be chasing down forever.
Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks!

I've swapped out my OEM suspension for Eibach springs and Tokico shocks and this issue still persists. I know it's not my wheel bearing, hatch, exhaust, evap or anything else because all of those things have been checked awhile ago.
I will talk to my master tech regarding the "hole fill" next time I see him and I will report if anything changes.

I have the Greddy Evo 2 exhaust, so the Evap has been relocated. I've actually put some material between it and the bottom of the car so it doesn't move at all.
I know it's the suspension, I can hear it on flat roads at really low speeds.

haven't had time to check it but
anyone think it might be the guide thingy that holds the rear bumper on...
I was just driving and looking back asking myself what could it be...
if anyone has removed the rear bumper knows that there are two guide slides for the rear bumper to attach to but after it guides on I think the trunk bumper clips holds most of the wiegh...
allowing this piece in my mind to rattle since...
anyone thinks it might that

I dunno if you seen my latest vid. But to me most of my rattle sounds as if it's coming from passenger side strut bar. But that's also cause I layed my 6ft3 lanky self in the back w/ the hatch open and put my ear on the floor board, strut bar, & exterior rear fenders. The loudest sound came from metal strut bar. Like something in it was a muck. My problem gets wierder though. When it's over 90 degrees, the rattle goes away.

yes
haven't left yet just took a dump.....
first take that thingy next to the hatch strut and put some sealant on it then put it back it's very noisy on it's own..
second make sure you taillights are fasten in tight
third put tape over the hatch latch not too much cause it won't come back up
fourth remove hatch struts
if all fails remove your jack or wrap it in cloth or something
ok leaving for a quick drive
