Question Severe engine braking, when off the gas pedal

Greetings. By the way, I have a 2008 6sp. I notice that when in gear and letting off the gas pedal, the "engine braking" is severe. It doesn't really matter which gear I am in, the car just wants to slow down if I am not pressing on the accelerator.

As you can probably imagine, the transitions from "on gas pedal" to "off gas pedal" is not smooth. The engine seems to rev freely for a split second, then the engine breaking occurs.

is this your first manual car or something? Engine braking is much more pronounced in manuals. And there's a lot of engine braking in the lower gears. and less towards 5th and 6th.

If your revs are high it will be more noticable than at lower revs.

I am 31 and been driving manual cars for 10+ years. What I am trying to say is, that it is severe compared to other cars I've driven / owned. There is almost no ability to "coast" at a steady speed. The gears in this car feels like "a rubber band that wants to retract almost immediately if let go." I just noticed is was more pronounced that any of the manual cars I've driven. If this is considered normal for the Z's, then all is good.

simple answer - high compression engine.

also, that is a good thing, saves brake pads.

Exactly.

Out of the manuals I've owned, the Z has the worst (best?) engine braking. I use it all the time.

It's normal. Get used to it.

Better have it checked out. Sounds like you need a new transmission. Its covered under warranty.

It can reflect his experience and knowledge with cars.

Like mentioned, it's part of having a higher compression engine. Doesn't hurt anything, jst gotta get used to it. Comes in handy for downhill roads, so you don't have to ride the brakes.
