I notice that there is definitely a different murmur in the engine when the clutch is not engaged! My car was built in April.

Good day all, I may be mistaken, but I beleive the noise you are hearing in only when the tranmission in in neutral, if s I beleive this is normal. To me it sound like the throw out bearing is where the noise is comming from. I had the same noise and still do. Nissan says that this is normal. Just to make sure, the last time I was at the dealer, one of the salesman let me check out a new one still sitting on the lot, so I checked it out and it also made the noise, actually is was loudeer then mine. Just my opinion.

about the 1st and second gear being notchy... i think we're just goin to have to cope with it. every z owner i talked to in person told me the same thing about how their second gear is notchy. sometimes my third is a lil weird too... when i shift from 2nd to third i feel like a notchy clunk kinda... i dunno.... seems to me the z tranny could of used a bit more work....

With all this talk about tranny problems any many other one's in general, I am real skeptical about getting th 2004 Z. I've always prefered the Z over the G35, but now I don't know...

My first and second are very notchy as well as some of my third. It goes in, but it almost feels like it doesnt want to some time. I have 450 miles on the car, just worries me a little. If I drive it 100% perfect it does not clunk though. Hmm...

Hey Ch@mp don´t believe everything you read here since it might not happen to you. YOu could not go into a car repair forum before buying because you will never buy it then. If you go in any car repair forum, no matter what brand it is.... You will fing people having problems........

I just got my 2004 Z and waited 4 months for it. It was worth every single sleepless night I had. It´s a wonderful piece of machine and definitely well worth your money.

Good Luck

Gentlemen, I have said this before. The mechanical lingage on the tranny does NOT work like cable shifters that you can just whisk from gear to gear w/o a short pause. A Nissan engineer compared the tranny action as similar to a good bolt action rifle. As with such a rifle, you have to be precise and don't rush the shift. If you just yank it from 1st to 2nd, you are likely to get a grind, pause for a fraction of a second and there will be no grinds.

Why did Nissan build such a tranny? Because it is a high torque beast like a small block v8, cable shifters can't handle the torque for long. If you will practice giving a slight pause between shifts into a different gear, I think you will not get the grinds and as you get better, your shifts will get faster and faster, but do it right or you will grind your gears. Just a suggestion.

i have driven manual shift cars for over 30 years. the throw from first to second is normal with the high perfornance tranny in the Z. try to let the gear shirt lever float from gear to gear and dont force it in it will go in smoothly. Its a far improvement from having ot double clutch a gear shift.enjoy the car
