Grinding Noise At Start Up
Well took my Z in and "typical" answer from the service dept....
"We could not replicate the sound you described"
B.S.x10!!
So now my plan is to put my Z up on a lift and check it out myself. Also carry a video camera to capture the sound.

Have the same problem. If I leave it for several days (overnight isn't enough) I get a momentary grind noise when it starts. Fortunately I drive it almost daily so it's not a big deal
I have the same rattle noise. Does it only when cold and car has been sitting.
Sometime it barely does it and is almost inaudible, but sometime it's louder and clankier. It happens around 1/2 a second after the ignition is turned and last for less than 1 second.
A lot of people seem to have it.

I think this is due to using aftermarket oil filters that do not have the OEM drain back valve.
I started experiencing this problem when I switched to an aftermarket filter. I am switching back to OEM next oil change!

If u have a grinding noice for a sec on startup and u are sure it is comeing from that area----Whats happening is ur starter is hanging up---It may very well not do it on a bench test.
Pull it,take it to a reputable starter/alternator repair place or just spin ur drive gear out by hand and see if it is smooth.
Most importantly chk ur flywheel ring gear. It should really show no wear or have any bright shiny spots on it.
