Default Advice Needed: Replacing Radiator Cooling Fan

So, it looks like I am having a common problem. When car is idle A/C blows warm air and engine eventually overheats. When I am driving everything is fine and A/C is ice cold.

I checked to see if both fans were working and the driver-side radiator fan is not.

First thing I did was to "burp" the system and try to get any air out. This did not solve the problem. Checked the fan motor plug, everything looked okay visually. I do not have a multimeter so I couldn't check voltage.

I am assuming this is a failed fan motor which will need to be replaced. I found just the motor for sale on ebay for around $40. Is there an easy way to remove the fan assembly to replace the motor without removing the bumper/radiator? I would rather not have to drain and refill the coolant if I don't have too.

PS: My car has 89,300 miles so I am out of the extended warranty for this issue.

Hey man,

As far as I know, you have to drain the cooling system first. Then remove or disconnect the following: Negative battery cable, Air cleaner duct assembly (pictured here), Fan motor connectors, and Radiator cooling fan assembly to get to the motor. Unfortunately, the motors are behind the cooling fans themselves:

I don't think that you have to remove the bumper in order to change the motor though. Could someone else verify this?

I removed/replaced the radiator and fans on my G w/o removing the bumper, although it was a tight fit

The only thing I NEED to remove is the fan assembly that you have pictured to replace the fan motor. I was wondering if anyone was able to remove just that without having to disconnect and remove the radiator too.

Were you able to replace your fan motor? If so, how difficult was it?

You can drop the fan shroud through the bottom of the motor without removing the radiator or bumper. Just need to pull the lower radiator hose.

I have a spare OEM shroud with working fans if you need it.

Thanks, I'll let you know. I only missed the warranty by 4 months. I'm going to see if I can sweet talk Nissan into honoring it.

Thanks for your help, the fan assembly was super easy to drop from beneath the car. I ordered a replacement assembly from Rock Auto. I went with the Dorman brand, it was $133.00 shipped. I'll be installing it this weekend.

Just came across this but for those replacing your fan assembly, it can be pulled from the top.

1. remove plastic shroud from bottom of car and unplug harnesses to fan assembly
2. remove airbbox
3. remove overflow tank
4. place towel underneath upper radiator hose
5. disconnect upper radiator hose at radiator at stuff radiator outlet with towel
6. unbolt screws at top of fan assembly
7. wiggle the **** out of fan assembly to get it out
8. you're going to bump the a/c lines underneath the intake box you removed..be careful not to bend them. they have a flex hose allowing movement. there may have also been a clamp bolted to the body holding them still; if so, remove it.
9. After getting the new fan assembly in place, install parts in reverse order.
10. Upon completion, jack up front end of car and open the coolant bleeder valve directly in front of the firewall to beside the battery.
11. Add additional coolant and relieve any air bubbles trapped in the system

It can be done on an 03' i know for certain

I have the same issue. Were you able to install the fan motor from the bottom and how did it go?
