Plastic OEM Undertray - Needed or Not?

Plastic OEM Undertray - Needed or Not?
That plastic covering under the car that covers the engine is it important? If I took it off will it be bad for the car? I know some cars just dont have it at all. I want to remove it because Its sorta damaged and kinda drags on the ground when ever I Drive. Will It be Bad to take it off and leave it off. Suggestion please. Thanks.
It wouldnt be there if it wasnt important. Those that run without it are idiots asking for problems. Dont be like them.
Get under there and ziptie it for now so it doesnt drag. Go buy a new one, or spend a little extra for the Zspeed aluminum plate.

Mine is getting kinda chopped up too, I'm going to have to order the ZSpeed one when my funds recover from this OS Geiken purchase.
I ran without it for about 3 weeks and suprisingly the car was still spotless underneath when I went to put it back on.

I've been running 3 years with out one no problem. There have been whole threads on this. The main argument for them is that the automotive engineers designed it that way and who are we question it... bla bla bla. But if that is the case the whole DIY section should be deleted.
So here's the fun facts:
What is it for: aerodynamics, cooling, road noise.
Is it needed: Only if you are super concerned about the above. In my OPINION is has a minimal effect on all three.
Why Take it off: It's damaged and not properly doing it's job anyway. It makes it a pain to work on the car. Like me you hate plastic.

It is nice to have if you encounter a road gator or something similar that might hop up and bite your car from below. However, if yours is torn and dragging the ground at times, it may be more of a risk that running without it.
Suggested order of preference:
1) Buy a new Zspeed aluminum aftermarket under shroud ($200)

2) Buy a used OEM undershroud in working condition (<$100)

3) Run without an under shroud (time/labor to remove)
4) Leave the torn, dragging under shroud like it is (free)
Personal experience - because of the custom front bumper I had on my roadster I ran without one for almost 2 years while putting right at 80k miles on the car. I currently have mine off on my coupe but plan to get the Zspeed one soon.

Take a close look at it. Look at all the crap that's bounced up and hit it. Now picture that happening to your engine, accessory belts, etc. You don't HAVE to have it, but you also don't HAVE to wash or wax your car. It's just a good idea.
Front inner fender liner drivers side ripped off first time I ran it w/o, picked up & salvaged inner fender liner on the hwy, but lesson nonetheless. Use it, but buy zspeed, i got it right after that.

Sorry to wake this old thread back up. The update is that I took the under tray completely off. The bad news is that I can't put my new z speed aluminum under tray on because the holes where the screws go at the bottom of the bumper are torn. My question is, Is there magically any fix for that, or the only thing left to do is buy a new bumper.
