Unhappy Cruise Control Tripped Service Engine Light

Hey guys

Was driving this past weekend at about 45 and turned cruise control on. As soon as I set the speed the "SLIP" light came on along with the "SERVICE ENGINE SOON" light.

I typically drive with TCS off unless the road is wet, but now I can't turn TCS on or off, even if I shut down the car and restart. The TCS OFF light is always on along with the SLIP and SERVICE ENGINE SOON lights.

The car has difficulty starting up now, it will turn and struggle to start but after 2 tries it does start up. Other than that the car is running normally (except for the dash lights I mentioned staying on, and unable to turn TCS on)

I am waiting for a friend of mine to come with his scanner to check the codes, but was wondering if anyone had some insight. I will edit once I find out what the codes are.

It is an 05, 113k miles, manual transmission, enthusiast with no engine mods other than a Popcharger and 5/16 plenum spacer

The only changes I have made recently was changing the engine oil, oil filter, cleaning the MAF, transmission and differential fluids per my owners manual and DIY threads one here. I can't imagine that any of these things caused the problem but I figured it is worth mentioning.

Any help appreciated

I had something kind of similar happen last month. I just recently bought my z and I was on the autobahn I hit cruise control and my check engine light came on and I could only go about 25 mph. The mechanic from the dealer reset the code and said my maf and throttle body needed to be reset and maybe cleaned. They did it and hasn't happened since. You said u did maint on ur maf. Maybe something's up with it? hope this helps.

I will definitely take this into consideration. I still haven't been able to get the scanner hooked up so I'm hoping once I see which codes are on it will help. Thank you

Seriously? My brakes are actually in pretty good condition...I will be sure to check the fluid though. How would that even relate to this?

Found it was a cam sensor code and just cleared it. Did fine on test drive immediately after that even with cruise control on.

If you could elaborate on the brake thing though that would be cool

I can get you the sensors at cost if you want them, but just add fluid it's something about retarding the car when you have little to no brakes... Don't ask me that was the fix...

Go to autoparts to get codes on paper or wait for your friend.
Cleaning the MAF means you needed to unplug it. unpluging the maf means YOU MUST GO THROUGH Maf relearn procedure. Turning the car on/off or unplugging the batt, OR code clearing is not enough it will come back on unless you do relearn.

Link to relearn:

Otherwise wait for codes.

Also for the future, buy a cheap OBD2 cable on ebay and use that with some of the free software so you dont need to rely on others for the codes, especially with the # of miles on the car.

Thanks alot I definitely do need to do this it didn't even cross my mind!

Will this still serve its purpose even if I already cleared the code and SES light is no longer on?

That is a good suggestion but I understand what he's saying. To get an extra cable just for the purpose of reading the codes I think. Both are good ideas

Well the cable will allow you to check codes imminently in the future. So for example if you have and issue that your car isnt starting, you may use the code cable to check/ clear the codes as the first step in the fixing process.

Also if you get the bluetooth version OBD2 reader, you can use apps on your phone like torque to check the codes even when you arent home!

Indeed, I dont know how to use an UPREV, It would be nice if someone made like a basis tuning tutorial with some of the softwares.

They Email you the tunes after you log your car for a few days and give you 3 tunes. The rest you can clear and check codes or delete codes to pass Emissions... Not saying I have done this ... But you can
