I saw these kits on ebay (i know, i know) that you slap on over the cubby door and things like that, but has anybody tried these? I tried taking a sharpie and hitting some of the really bad scratches, but it almost made it worse since it's a different shade of black.

 

Just repaint the hard plastic with interior spray paint (cant remember the name offhand, sell it at Autozone etc) and for the parts with that gummy paint on them, scrape it off and paint with regular spray paint. Its easy to get your interior looking brand new.

Those stick on kits are hideous and cheap looking, IMO.

 

Just wonder'in,have you SEEN a "stick onkit" in person?
Or,is this just an opinion based on what you have heard?

Use masking tape and flat black spray paint. Works great on all areas.

 

Just a comment on DIY...not everyone is capable of turning out a professional
job.In fact more cannot than can.Its easy for those of us that have done these
refurbs before.But to a newbie that has never used a rattle can,its a mess waiting to

I simply painted the front compartment and door cubby holes *in situ* by masking around them and using a flat black spray paint.

 

There is a paint called Trim paint, its by Dupli-Color. It matches perfect, clean the parts good (I use dish detergent, or alcohol) be careful not to touch them unnecessarily, use light coats and a few of them, letting it dry in between. Even matches perfect on the dotted parts, mine were scratched like that and it turned out exact, no difference same sheen and texture.

I only painted the lid, and it is perfect match, there is no way from looking at the color and sheen you can tell any difference.

 

buy some paint and figure it out. If you mess up do it again. You will learn how to do it right eventually.

 

Man,I agree with you on this paint.I've used prolly every paint out there.
DupliColor got it right with this one.You can get pro OEM-look results.
It has just the right sheen.The paint's primary purpose was to refinish exterior pieces like side view mirror fronts,pillars etc.Its almost fool proof
to not get a good finish.Extremely durable too.I've not used it on interior apps.But,I'd think it would be a excellent match.

 

I'm actually painting mine right now. I sanded them with my dremel. Used 180 grit at low speed. Like 10-15k rpm. Take your time sanding. This is the most important step. First peel back the black "rubber layer". Then take the gray primer layer off until you reach the actual plastic "black". Next I wet sanded by hand with 1000 grit. Dry the piece then hit it with some primer. Let it dry over night. Wet sand again with 2000 grit. Let it dry. Then hit it with Duplicolor Vinyl and Fabric spray paint. I put on about 2 or 3 coats. Let it dry overnight. Then hit it with a clear coat/sealer. Done

Even the Middle rubbery interior parts can be painted? Like the Cubby door.

 

I absolutely have.

Most look bubbly, you can often see parts of the original dash etc (especially on curved areas or places where two pieces come together) and in generally look like stickers with 1/8" of shellac poured on them.

Of course, I did say it was in my opinion... so some people may love them. I, personally, think they look like garbage.

Its SO easy to DIY. I've done a ton in my car and had never done it before. There are plenty of DIY guides here on the website. You arent doing permanent damage with a rattlecan. I've had to redo a few things because I didn't get it right the first time, but literally anyone can figure out how to spray paint stuff.

I really appreciate the input guys! For now, I think I'll be looking for a new cubby door. The part that makes me nervous with paint is that I'll have to do the whole center console because if I just painted the cubby box, it would be a different color. As good as some of the guys on the forum are, I don't trust myself pulling apart the interior of my car, let alone painting it.

In the future, I'll probably use the duplicolor on the doors. That way, it'll be less visible if I mess up and I won't be so concerned about perfectly color matching everything around it.
