Just called the mechanic, he said he did a pressure test on the cooling system, he said if the head gasquet was weak it would have showed up in that. I asked him about the compression test on the cylinders, he said the engine it running fine and that wasn't necessary. He said there was no water or anythuing in the oil as well, and the engine is 100% fine. Does this all sound right?

A pressure test of the cooling system can only check for readily apparent problems with the radiator, coolant lines and passages. It WILL NOT determine the overall condition of your VQ the way a leakdown test will. It sounds like you want some additional assurance your engine was not damaged. If so, a leakdown test can help determine that and you'll need to find a competent shop to perform one and explain the results to you.

most shops will charge you $150-$300 depending on thier labor rate. dealership is going to charge you $300-$500. in all honesty if they do find a problem are you going to spend the $2k to fix your engine, for something you can't notice while driving? if not why waste your money on the tests?

What people are saying here is that if your engine suffered some damage, there's not much you can do about it unless you're willing to do a full rebuild. A leak down test will give you an idea if compression across all cylinders is equal. If they results are wildly off, you could be driving on borrowed time. All engines begin to suffer from wear from time, heat and stress, so don't expect perfect results. Look for a good independent Nissan garage to perform this test (might want to change out your NGKs while they're at it if you're anywhere near 100K) and explain the results to you.

Is a leak down test the same thing as a compression test? If not, i will get both a leak down test and compression test and post the results on here

Ok so let me get this all straight. I had the pressure test, and will get the results to that and put them on here. I will also get a leak down test and a compression test. Once I have all those tests done, and I check to oil and it isn't that chocolate color, if all these things pass, then the engine is perfectly fine? There isn't anything else to check for?

Also I just want to make sure I have this correct, but there are two types on compression tests? One on the cooling system and the other on the cylinders? The pressure test of the cooling system tests for head gasket failure right? Isnt this what a leak down test would do? If I already had the head gasket tested from the pressure cooling test, then do I still have to get the leak down test? Please help me with this stuff guys I don't know anything about engines and am concerned. Thank you so much in advance.

So I called Pep Boys, and they said a dry compression test is 50 dollars, and the leak down test is also 50 dollars. I will take it there tomorrow and get those two tests done and then post the results on here. From the information I have read, a wet compressin test is only necessary if the dry compressions tests numbers are off because that will find ou where the problem is. So if the dry compression test and the leak down test come back good, then my engine did not suffer any damage from the overheating, is this correct?

catostrophic failure yes you would notice. weakening the head gasket but not completely breaking the seal, no wouldn't notice driving normally. you wont know till you drive it aggressivley or over time and something bad happens. ethier way you were the cause so just drive it normaly and be vigilant of checking your oil and coolant for any change in levels or unusual color. if your engine does let go early you know the cause.

So they tested to cooling system and everything was good, and also did a compression test. He said they all came back right around 152, and the factory specs should be from 142-185. I have a 2006 automatic with 50k miles on it. They said the only thing that wasn't working was the fan which is why it overheated a bit today.

Radiator was replaced in the accident and overheats now, very simple. Bleed the cooling system, you have an air pocket. Most people do not know how to properly do this on a Z

Yeah that's what this place said, they said I had an air pocket. They bled the cooling system and then reved the car up. The fan they said did not work though, so that is getting replaced.

There is also a bleed port off the back of the heater hose that needs be to used to get the air out. Tell then about it, many do not know. Pass side near firewall.
