Default Oil pressure at ACC?

Hi everyone,

My oil pressure gauge is reading at 60psi on start up. It goes to about 100 psi when driving 70mph.

I've read threads about it being the sensor. Is that what it could be in this case?

Does anyone know what the oil pressure gauge is supposed to read at when the key is halfway turned? Don't remember if it's supposed to be 0 or 60

It's a little chily today and I noticed a little bit of black smoke towards the higher end of the rpm range. Is that normal?

If the car is not running it should be at 0.

If it is running, it should be about 15psi at idle and about 45psi at 2000rpm under load. Type of oil you are using etc will make slight changes to this.

If your car reads 60psi before the engine is running, the sensor is probably bad. Really easy fix, had to replace mine last year and it fixed the same problem you are describing.

That's exactly why a lot of cars don't have an op gauge. They even had to change the gauge on the Titans so they read half way all the time. People just don't understand.

I think the OP's car needs a sending unit.

I've had to replace mine twice so far. If you run a heavier oil and when you start it up cold the pressure will "peg" the sending unit, I'm guessing that is what happens, mine failed when I was running 40 weight oil.

I was about to post about my issue, but I'll just comment on here.

I have replaced my sending unit, but my needle still jumps around during normal cruising. And will fall flat out to 0 until I tap the top of the gauge, then it jumps to normal reading. I think at this point it has to be something electrical causing the needle to jump like this.

I run 0W-40 & the gauge is pegged immediately after a cold start regardless of ambient temperature.

My .02 worth. I run Valvoline 10w30 and never a problem - S/C Vortech. Driven in 100 degree down to 45 degree. As mentioned above Post #2 type of oil is a littler determination, but not major. When in doubt see an expert. (Northern CA. I see Rob at ZCargarage as an example). Takes them only a minute to give you expert information.
