Default Tightening emergency brake? (Halp)

Hey guys, bought my Z about 4 months ago. Been very frustrated with my extremely loose e-brake.. I can't even keep my car in neutral on a very little slant. I know to put your car into gear, but when i'm chillin in the Z waiting for my gf in her driveway, I hate having to turn my car off and put it in gear. lol. The last owner must have drifted the chit out of it. Probably why I just spent $1,100 on all new tires... Any help is much appreciated. Thanks!

You'll have to pop the rotors off and adjust them inside, if they're not fubar. Once you've made them proper inside the rotor you should be able to gain more adjustment on the cables if needed.

I don't think you have to remove the rotors to adjust the hand brake. There are holes through the rotor to put a screwdriver through to make the needed adjustments.

There is adjustment under the center console as well IIRC.

I just adjusted mine at the drums when I replaced my brakes.

And you don't use the parking brake to drift in a 350Z. They wont grab.

ALSO, parking a car in gear is not a guarantee that it wont roll away. If I didn't have a parking brake I would have to put a wheel chock in the driveway.

It is also possible the linings are worn. If so, that would require replacement of the linings in the small parking brake drums.

I would start at the drum adjustment first and go from there. You shouldnt really be adjusting it at the handle inside the car unless you need to make a minor adjustment.

Take the rear rotors off first and have a look at the condition of the parking brake shoes. THEN, assuming they're okay, go ahead with the adjustment. There are other points of adjustment as well and they're all referenced in the PB (Parking Brake) section of the Factory Service Manual. Links to the free FSM are in the sticky.

What year is your z? how many miles on it? I would answer that before you go through the headache of checking the e brake shoes...they are only used for the ebrake, they last forever unless you drive with your e brake on 24/7 lmao

That's what I would do. Blindly adjusting them would be foolish.

My e-brake became loose and ineffective. I followed the steps you describe below, and that was the fix. e-brake is working well now. --Spike
