Default Airbag warning light

Hi all,

I'm sure most of you already know this, but for those who don't, I'd like to share my experience with you and it may just save you some time and mon ey.

When I bought my Z the Airbag light was on. The problem was the airbag in the passenger seat. Once I replaced that, the light went off.

About a week or so ago I was backing into the garage and scraped the front bumper on the garage door track. And a little while later I was adjusting the panel behind the drivers seat because I had replaced the woofer and they didn't replace the molding right.

The next day I noticed the airbag light on again. So I thought it was one of the two things I did the day before that caused it. I had it scanned and it was not an active error, but the history said it was an open/shorted LH module.

I didn't mind not having airbags because when I grew up, there were only lap belts, but that light irks the heck out of me. I spent days trying to find the cause and just focused on the drivers side.

And just by chance I unplugged the airbag connector under the drivers seat, blew in it, and then reconnected it. I reset the airbag light and whoolaa, the light stayed off and hasn't been on since.

I hope this can help someone, I search all over the placed and couldn't find anything on it.

Thanks for posting your experience, maybe it'll help somebody else. Why did you have to replace the PS airbag?

The PS airbag looked crushed. It may have been because of the way you get in and out. BTW, mine is a convertible and it seems like some of the passengers I have sort of put their weight on the part of the seat where the airbag is and slide in. That's the only reason I can think of why it would be crushed.

FWIW, never disconnect the airbag harness while the battery is plugged in. Disconnect the battery ground and give the system 30 minutes or so to discharge before disconnecting anything under the seats. An airbag deploying in a seat if you're in the wrong place can kill you.

For what it's worth, airbags always look crushed and flat in their normal stored condition. Although most cannot be inspected before they're actually deployed!
