Default Hard to Fill TSB -> Shutter Valve and Fuel Hose Replacement for $200?

Just took my 2006 Z into get serviced for the hard to fill fuel tank TSB and the mechanic came back and said that in doing so he noticed my shutter valve and fuel hose also need replacement but since he's already there for the TSB he could do it for just the cost of the parts at $200. My car only has 60k miles on it and has spent all of its time in the moderate climate of southern California, so I'm suspicious I'm being upsold. I tried looking up the price of the parts online and everything I found seems much cheaper than $200, but I'm not sure I found the right parts. Any thoughts?

Was this done at a Nissan dealer? Did you ask the tech whether those parts were included as part of the TSB?

Yes, done at the dealer. The parts are not part of the TSB. It sounded more like the mechanic went in to do the TSB and saw that these also needed replacing, not necessarily as part of the hard to fill problem. It's a little unclear though as I'm getting this second hand from the service manager who talks to the mechanic.

The dealership often receives a lower amount for service when it is warranty work paid by the factory. That raises suspicion when the service manager offers to repair something (and, at a substantial discount) in addition to the warranty work being done on your car.

I can provide a personal example. My transmission was replaced under warranty when the synchromesh failed on 5th gear (the notorious swap to the CD009 transmission). The service manager called me and offered to replace the clutch for a substantial discount. He strongly advised this because they saw significant wear and I would save since the car was already apart. My 350z had about 40K miles at the time. I did not replace the clutch and the clutch assembly lasted until 120k. Truthfully, the clutch was still fine at 120k, but I wanted to try a single mass flywheel.

Something else: The shutter valve and fuel hose were replaced on my 350z very soon after I purchased the car new in 2003. I received a factory recall notice advising me to take the car into the dealership to have the filler hose replaced. The early recall was driven by a safety issue (and nothing to do with shutoff at the fuel pump). The fuel hose was replaced under warranty because of a fire hazard when refueling the car. This was a Factory Recall and not a TSB.

I know this is an old topic but it might help somebody in the future.

The shutter vavle cant be replaced, its in the fuel tank so you would have to cut the tank open or bend the internal baffles to get to it. I believe the tsb is to replace the vent line if the vent line is not an intregal part of the fuel tank, and replacing the entire fuel tank if it is. I would question the mechanic and get your old parts. The odds of them having an old shutter valve they could pass off as from your car would be pretty slim. I have the tsb at home, ill attach it when I get home.
