oil pressure gauge and exhaust smell (long)
Ok peeps. Little background first.
2 weeks back, my oil pressure warning light was going off. I look over at the gauge and sure enough that needle is going down to ZERO when the car is idling. If i hit the accelerator, the needle goes up to the first line.. So of course i freak out. Check the oil level, and it "looks" low. I say looks because that dang dip stick is difficult to put in and pull out. By the time i yank it out, the oil reading line is a mess...
So i take it to the dealership. I already had an appt for the oil change and to fix the window grease as well as look at my tire feathering.
The call and say they changed the oil and checked the oil pump. Say it is working fine. Im like WTF?. nothing wrong with it?
So of course now im worried about it and i look at the oil pressure gauge more often then ever. So this is what i notice now. When i first start the car and drive it, the oil pressure needle sits at the half way mark when idle, and when i accelerate, the needle goes all the way up to 120.. after driving it for a bout 10 min, the needle sits between the first line and the 60... when i accelerate it goes up just pas the 60 or so.
What im worried about is when i first drive it. Should the needle be up that high? If everyones elses does it, then i wont worry..
2nd,
I notice that if i accelerate hard, i smell fumes in the car. Its not to a point that i have to put the windows down, but it is certainly noticible... anyone elses do that?
so here is a guess.. maybe.. my engine is burning oil somewhat. I notice that when i clean the bumper of the car, the rag turns black from the exaust fumes sticking to the bumper.. it doesnt burn oil that i see a white cloud.. but maybe its enough that it burns oil, and thats why possible the oil was "possibly" low when i checked it. Low oil could have been the reason i had low oil pressure. The nimrods at the dealer could have not checked the "issue" until AFTER they changed the oil, which had the correct amount of oil...
So its a guess, im gonna have the dealer check it out.. but im skeptical they will really check due to the "nothing wrong" claim i got before.
The car is being dropped off to have the tires replaced, free of charge, on friday due to feathering.. Im going to aks them to check out my "theory" with the oil burning.....
So if you guys could take a peek at your oil gauges when you first start the car after it has been sitting for a couple hours, i would appreciate it.
Also any thing else you can poiint out wiht my "theory" would be great. prove me wrong, prove me right.. i dont care.
just wanna hear from you smart guys. I am definately not a motor/engine guy....
oh and they fixed the window grease issue when i dropped it off the first time.

So this may or not mean anything, but it is at least a point of reference.
My car is a 2003 Enthusiast, 19,700 miles.
1. Oil pressure (when fully hot)
Idle: 30
3000 RPM: 60
5000 RPM: 90
2. Oil pressure when cold
Idle: 60
3000 RPM: ~100
3. Oil consumption: zero. Nothing, not a drop since new, not even during break in.
The oil is whatever the dealer puts in it when they change the oil, I think it is Castrol 5/30 Synthetic.

Looks fine to me. I doubt your dealer puts synthetic in your car. They are cheap a$$es most of the time.
I dont notice any smell under full throttle. Are you letting the car warm up before flooring it?

I had the same problem , changed my Oil to Synthetic back in August , then early in October the Oil light came on , booked it to my friends garage up on the hoist ,dropped the the cover to drain the Oil and less than a quart left , talk about SHOCK , no leakage at all , checked the PCV Valve and their was oil leftover in the Valve , so changed the Oil back to 5w-30 new oil filter , and been monitoring the car at every chance , but it's in the Garage for the winter, Nissan is going to do a complete check then monitor it every 3000km's , I also have the SMELL , I had a plastic bag attach itself to my exhuast pipe, last year , but the SMELL is still their, let you know going in middle of April.
Spud, what you are describing is completely normal. My car and as a matter of fact every car does this. As the oil warms up it spreads all over the engine so the oil pressure drops because there is less of it in one spot.
What you are describing in the very beginning of your post I am not so sure about. Don't know if your last oil change was done improperly or what but the lowest my oil pressure needle has ever gotten was around thirty psi.

I have the same issue, buring oil, dealer said nothing wrong the first time, then I demanded an oil consumption test, which was 3 qts low. Now nissan is offering me a new engine. I also have the fethering problem, clicking issue, exhust soot. Angry I am, and the ca nissan line is unhelpful to say the least.

they said they did the test and nothing was wrong.
I have it in writing, and if it does turn out to be a problem, im all over their *** to fix the problem.. via the new engine if need be.

In writing is not enough...I requested to observe the outcome of the test which is just measuring how much oil the car will take when in need of an oil change. I never let my car out of sight, I just do not trust the dealership, as sad as this is it is a fact. Anyway, If i did not observe, I am sure the dealer would have returned my car stating that all is ok.
You do need to get to know the oil stick reading which is a difficult one because they did try to fool me and I knew better, and I am a female to make matters worse.
I am in the process of finding out my rights as a consumer and having all of the problems I do with the car, I would rather a replacement car.
Nissan just called and is replacing my front tires for the feathering issue. Also the are painting the back bumper for damage the did when the took off the back plate.
I told nissan when the change my tires I better not see any damage on the rims or they will need to replace..
When ever I take the car in I ask for a copy of the walk around, I would recommend the same to anyone taking a car in to the dealer.

Good luck. All i can do is pay attention and check the oil stick every so often. I have it in writing that nothing is wrong. If something IS wrong, then i have more ammo to ensure i get it fixed right.
Good luck with your car. oh and i had my rims scratched also!
