Default Oil Consumption

My 03 Z has about 9400 miles. I've just changed the oil recently. I've noticed that the oil drained seemed to be less than before my previous oil changes. So I decided to measure by pouring the dirty oil back into the bottles. It came back to be a little over 3 quarts. I change my oil using rhyno ramps. I don't think it's normal for a quart and a half to be lost. I'm still using regular Pennzoil 5W-30. I have not switched to synthetic yet.

I'm sure people who take their car in for oil changes won't know how much is coming out. And the service guys probably don't care. For those who change their own oil, please post how much oil is drained when you change it.

I think mine is loosing some too.. Not 1.5 quarts but maybe a half... I change the oil myself and buy the 5qt jugs of mobil1 5w 30. Right after the oil change the oil shows to be right on the line of the H. When it is time for my next oil change, the oil is showing right in the middle between L and H ..

is that about a half quart?

I don't change my own oil - too much hassle - but I do check the level weekly. My '03 Z has just over 21,000 miles. Oil consumption: zero since new, not a drop. The oil level never goes down at all between changes.

Default nna giving me a new egine d/t oil consumption

I have added 10 qts not including oil added for changes in 14k miles of use.

CRAZY to burn this much oil--nissan to put a new engine in soon.

I am also going to the bbb for a replacement, I don't want this care even with a new engine.

I also have the feathering tire issue.

It depends on your driving on how much engine oil is used. See I do mostly city driving during the week. About 5miles one way to work. At least twice a week I take it to the highway for a little cruise. That is when the oil level goes down slightly. I think its because of the moisture build up on the short trips. The highway miles completely burns the moisture in the engine.

I have 5300 miles in a year on my Z, but I drive the bejeezus out of her when I do go out for a late night spin. So far, no loss of oil in three changes. One at 600, one at 1800 and the last just 100 miles ago. The next one will probably be at 10000 miles. The results from Blackstone were really good on the last change, most of the excess minerals and alloys were out of the oil by the second change, and the last showed perfect oil, probably 10000 miles left on it. On ramps, I have found that 1/2 a quart remains in the crankcase, right in the middle of H and L like mode101 was asking. This is no big deal, I just fill 4 1/2 quarts and it comes out perfect.

Default oil consumption = engine replacement

Your car should not be burning that much oil. My car would lose 2-3 quarts in 3000 miles. Do a search on oil consumption and engine replacement. Long story short, Nissan realized that there was something very wrong with my brand new 350Z, and at 8000 miles they replaced my engine with a new one under warranty. If you are losing that much oil, you need a new engine, courtesy of Nissan.

With each oil change I am losing more and more oil. In the last 3 changes I went from losing 1/2 quart to 3 quarts. I have a very early build date (see my sig) on my car so I am thinking that maybe I need a new enging if it is increasingly burning more and more oil. I do alot of highway driving and I drive the car hard, but 2 quarts of oil is excessive.

I believe that the distance between the low and the high marks on the stick represents more than a quart. Mine is currently consuming nearly a full quart every 3,500 miles. That's nearly a full quart too much IMHO. A brand new motor shouldn't be burning any.

I just done my oil change, using mobil 1 5w-30, and it seems to have lost a quart. I do my oil change every 4k, and i have 12.5 k now. i remember the last oil change, i only lost half a quart, but now a quart.

How often do you guys change your oil? and what is the optimal change for mobil 1 users?

i've seen lots of posts on this stuff. seems to be an entirely too common problem, so i've gotten pretty paranoid about it, especially after looking under my hood one day and seing a drop or two of oil splashed across the polished upper intake of my injen cai. been checking it regularly since then, but i haven't noticed any appreciable oil loss.
