Do you place both pennies face up or do you need to alternate them front/back??? Please post more photos...

You've got to toss them in the air and catch them with the rubber housing. However they land in there, that's the way they should be. If this method is not used, then it will not work.

Default **UPDATE**

I live in nice cold Chicago..and I've found that the two penny method works fine in the summer...but once the ambient temp drops below 30 degrees....I needed to add another penny in each side.

The 3 penny method that HokieZ is preferred.

I've been able to verify the 3 penny method is viable down to 12F. Below that is anybodies guess.

I don't know if the rubber sleeve will stay in place with 4 pennys in there..it was hard enough to get it back together with 3.

Nissan has a TSB that replaces the springs with better ones...I might just go get that done....

Amazing! The wealth of knowledge on this board is great. I've had my car to the dealer twice for this problem before the tsb came out and was told there is nothing they can do to fix it. I fixed it in 5 minutes thanx to this thread. thanks guys.

Yeah, my rear hatch would never open when I was by myself. Go to the dealer 3 times and all three time it opened flawlessly. Haven't had the problem since this fix.

This whole thing reminds me of something we do at work for encoder feedback. Since you can't buy or make a piece of metal to act as a pickup, we use 4 pennies on a disc instead. Works great.

Well I went out this morning and the trunk didn't open after the 4 penny upgrade. I already removed the weight and my car has the factory spoiler. It was about 45 degrees so it was not very cold. I added an extra penny to each side. Hope it works. If not I'll have to take it to the dealer for new springs.

As easy as this is, and I just did it, the dealer should be doing this for us no-questions-asked. GRrr!
