Some nice progress Rusty - How do you like the Tilton? was it hard to install? My oem master is hurting quite a bit and ordered a tilton. Happy to hear you're healing up.
The tilton upgrade to me was well worth it. Not sure how much was the cmc and how much was changing out to the ss line replacement. Did make for a much more predictable clutch travel. Can't wait to see how everything works after i can install all the new parts and of course another engine.
Now is just a waiting game while awaiting my back to heal, getting a engine hoist and stand, then ordering a replacement engine. Hoping to have the car running and back on the road by late spring.
Time to get the car running again
- although i was not able to obtain the engine in wanted, just ordered a lightly used jdm import. Should have it by the end of the week. Trying to decide if i should detail the engine before i put it in or just get it running. Know i will kick myself in the butt if i don't detail it but also have not driven the z in over 2 years so... guess we shall just see. Ordered a few gaskets and rear main seal to install before everything goes back together. Hopefully i remember to take pics as i start progressing.
Driveline is in the car now, still have to install accessory drives, cooling system, repair cam sensor connectors that are coming from wiring specialties and a few other things. Here are some progress pics with more to come.
do you have the clutch alignment tool? If it was me, I’d have installed the trans with the engine outside of the car.
eitherway!
looks good / clean (literally and figuratively)as hell!!
My son broke on of the connectors when we were pulling the engine and i cracked the other. Both won't lock so ordered new ones, should have them in under a week. Engine and trans are in the car already. Have a trans jack so was extremely easy. Will take more pics today while reinstalling other parts. Have some heat protection items coming from summit today to add some additional protection alone with some additional items that came with the tomei headers.
I wish i had more time and i would have cleaned up the engine alot more and painted it, will save that for later down the road i suppose once i can afford a built engine.
Everything is back together, just need to fill fluids which may happen today depending on weather and need to go buy a new battery. Almost time to turn the key

I’m still amazed at the cleanliness of your install, Rusty! Great work, love seeing the work pics instead of so many talky-talk threads leading to “Yeah, right, uh huh....” 😜
Timing cover does not look as good as it did before i pulled the engine 2.5 years ago. This timing cover isn't painted.
The most important thing though is..... "drum roll" its alive and running!!!!
Ended up having a bad bank 1 cam sensor with a bent pin on this used engine. Thankfully i have spares and replaced it. No codes now and took care of a small coolant leak. Only thing left is to finish bleeding the cooling system (pain in the dink), get temp tags so i can get it inspected and registered.
Should be taking a few more pics over the next few days of the final install. Used a decent amount a heat wrap so some things don't look as clean as i like but will address those issues later with some custom heat sheilds or something.
they are actually BDE engine mounts and so far feel great, of course i added the torque solutions trans mount as well so might be hard to tell the full difference of the motor mounts themselves.
So far loving the sound of the exhaust with the tomei headers, even my family has commented on the sound difference
Since this is my new used engine and never detailed like my old engine i started modifying and cleaning up the timing cover. Lets see if anyone can see what i did to mine in comparison to the stock. After i can afford some new seals i will replace the upper cam covers with the ones i modified from my old engine. Not going to risk oil pressure issues for now.
i think my vvt solenoid and valve covers are next. Have new spark plug tube seals for my other painted covers, also have new solenoids that were on my old engine. Just needs to get gaskets and seals for the next update. Btw if you didn't notice, i ground alot of mounting points off the cover.
