Gonna buy a jeep
I know im an F'ing jackass for spelling buy wrong. It was a typo and not a grammatical error.
Jesus im an idiot today.
So ive been looking for a DD/beater and after seeing DJs thread about his car I think I just pushed it up on my priority list.. Ive always wanted a jeep. Ive just always thought they were pretty cool. Problem is I really dont know that much about them. I was wondering if you guys have pointers on what to look for etc. Kinda like if someone came in here and asked about what Z to by we would all go down the list of Feathering, windows, Trannys, oil consumption etc etc. Im not looking for something that could go up the side of a building just something to cruise around in while its snowing etc.
Any advice? I know lots of you are ricers and have only had civics and accords as previous cars. But I know there are some good rednecks floating around who may know about this stuff.
Looking to spend as far under 10K as possible if that helps with advice.
Thanks Mid A

If you care more about having a daily driver/beater/econobox, just get a nice used fwd car. They can easily be had for under 5,000 and you'll get way better gas miliage. I got my 2001 Cavalier for $1,200 with 120,000 miles on the clock. I've put 45,000 care free miles on her in the past two years, and i average 27MPG.
If you care more about having a Jeep then a DD/beater/econobox then be ready for lots of little issues, and paying significantly more for it, and a drop in fuel economy. I've never owned one, but had plenty of buddies that have. If you like tinkering, then go for it. But it's not what i would consider "reliable trasportation".
If you do get one, try to get one with the 4.0 straight 6. That's been one of the best engines in the jeep lineup. Avoid the 4 cyl at all costs. (if you are even looking at one that old)

yeah im not really concerned with Gas mileage etc. and ive heard both sides of the debate about jeeps. Its either a love or hate thing. Some people have them for 200,000miles with no problems others have problems at 20,000miles. Ive also read about the 4.0I6 being the best engine (and to stay on the 2000+ side of the model year spectrum). I know a used civic would be the most ideal thing to get i.e. the most responsible but I feel as if I dont do it now I may never do it. Kinda like buying the Z
I just sold my 98 honda with 208,000 miles on it for $800 (bad clutch, needed timing belt/water pump, alternator and distributor needed to be replaced). I originally bought it for 2500 with 90,000 miles on it. I definitely got my money's worth out of it and I know something like that would be the best purchase.
I guess I just really want a jeep. If more people talk me out of this maybe I will just go buy another accord.

what kind of jeep are you looking for... XJ, WJ, or Wrangler (YJ-produced '87-'95, TJ '97-06) or the newer ones I think they are called JK's..
I would definitely get the 4.0L its solid, I have had the motor in both of the jeeps I have owned.. current one has 96,000 miles on it.. no problems with the vehicle except for the rotors warping (common problem with the WJ's).. I would try and jump on one of the Jeep forums once you figure out what model you are looking for..

If you want *ultimate* handling: any WRX that's above the year 2002.
If you want *ultiamte* speed/torque/acceleration: any Impreza from 93-01. (The 1995 4dr sedans were actually the lightest, however there's only a 5 lbs difference between the coupe and sedans of this year model.. yea.. weird eh?)
The 2002+ chassis is much more rigid than the previous models, but they're also 400 lbs heavier. You can add a TBE (Turbo Back Exhaust,) intake, and chip to make 230-250awhp which can toast your Z anyday of the week in any weather.
In 2005, they started making the 2.5 litre turbos WRX's, 02-04 had the 2.0 litres, if you can get your hands on the bigger displacement engines... do it!
However, if you want the more classic Imprezas (93-01,) they're MUCH lighter and you can make them MUCH quicker (in a straight line) STI and WRX engines drop right in these suckers. They're capable of 9-10 second runs in the 1/4 mile since you can strip these down to 2500/2600 lbs combined with 330awhp (on a stock sti block and stock turbo!) you have yourself a monster!
The handling of the 93-01 imprezas is pretty darn good (not as good as the newer ones, but still awesome.) Great for off-roading/snow driving/rain racing or any type of weather.
Maintenance on these cars are SUPER LOW. You hardly ever need to change a single thing except maybe the wheel bearings. AWD is harsh on the stock bearings and they go out every 40-50k miles.
With a 10k budget, I can hook you up with a guy selling his Impreza RSTi (RS + STI engine swap) who's looking for 11-12k, but I'm pretty sure you can talk it down to 10k cash.
Warning though: Once you get one, you'll never want to drive your Z again!
It's strength lies in low speed corners, you can overcome your opponent by using your AWD advantage. The local AutoX champion here drives a 01' Impreza 2.5 RS. However, during long sweeping turns these cars don't go as fast (like 100+ MPH turns) But if you don't do many 100+ mph turns, you should be fine.
Oh did I mention it gets 25/30 MPG?!? Holla!!
PS. I myself have a 00' Impreza, you should test drive it at the next meet and see for yourself.
Audi's tend to not be as reliable, and they don't go any faster. However, they're a lot more luxurious (if that's what you like?)

I love Jeeps, specifically the tried and true 4.0L I-6
My family has owned one that my friend now owns with 230K RAGGED (guess by who?) miles, many friend with 300K, now my GF has one as a DD for the next 2 years. I drive a GC 4.7
They are cheap to fix WHEN soemthing goes wrong - I capitalize that because all cars will at some point have issues. I-6's are very reliable, some have issues with intake manifold gaskets leaking small amounts of oil. The belt systems on them can be tempermental, squeeling when changed, even after a new A/C compressor and idler pulley, but its not common.
You going for a Wrangler I assume? If you go for a Cherokee, look at the top of the door jam by the A-pillar and roof outside, they have a body line there that holds water and many rust.
Overall, one of my favorite American brands, very simple, nothing fancy, and reliable in my opinion.
EDIT-didnt read you changed your mind....
Audi as a CHEAp, RELIABLE DD?? Buahahaha
Subies are awesome for reliability. If you do a 2.5RS or a WRX dont shift the manual HARD, they are glass at the WRX's power levels, good in the 2.5RS (same tranny). My friend has one 130+k HARD miles never any serious issues, great cars. AWD in Mid-A weather helps a ton as well.
